It is with love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Valrie (Valerie) Madge Patrick (née Hamilton) on August 30, 2025, in Vancouver, B.C.
Valrie was born on January 6, 1941, in Highgate, St. Mary, Jamaica, to Daisy and Gershom Hamilton. She grew up in a large and loving family with her siblings Rupert (Chappie), Stanford (Buck), Cornelia (Connie), Carmen, Mary, Hortance (Cutie), and Linette (Nettie). To her Jamaican family she was affectionately known as “Cherry,” a nickname that reflected her bright hair and vibrant spirit.
In 1964, Valrie emigrated to Canada, where a small clerical error changed “Valrie” to “Valerie.” She carried both names proudly, “Valerie” to the world, and “Valrie” in her heart.
She was a devoted mother to her four sons David, Christopher, Stephen, and Rodney who were her greatest joy. Later in life, she was blessed with grandchildren: Josh, Tasia, Porsche, Anika, Trey, Tia, Tyson, and Trinity. She was also a great-grandmother to Zsahara and Aria Valrie, who brought her immense delight.
Valrie will be remembered for her faith, her strength, and her generosity. She shared her love through cooking and baking, carrying on the traditions of her Jamaican roots, and through her talent for gardening, which brought beauty and abundance to her home. Her warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Dogwood Lodge Hospice for their care in her final days.
Valrie’s memory will be cherished always, and her legacy of love and devotion will continue through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Valrie’s memory may be made to St. Thomas Anglican Church (2444 East 41st Ave, Vancouver), where she was a faithful and active member of the congregation.
