After living a life full of faith, love, laughter, travel, good food, and friendship, Virginia Montalban Jimeno Linan passed peacefully in her sleep after a second hard-fought battle with cancer on December 8, 2022 at St. John Hospice in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Her daughter was by her side.
Born on July 29, 1949, in Caloocan City, Philippines to Atty. Jose Jimeno Jr. y Paredes and Caridad Jimeno (née Montalban y Manuel), Virginia was raised in Quezon City, Philippines with her three younger sisters. She grew up extremely close to her large extended family with whom she enjoyed lavish parties and special gatherings after church, on holidays, and other special occasions. Upon graduating from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila with a Bachelor of Arts degree (1969) and a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) (1973), she passed the Philippine Bar exam in 1973. After moving to Canada in 1975, Virginia enjoyed a fulfilling career of over three decades at the Bank of Montreal, retiring from the Real Estate Finance division in 2011. She married Diego (Tito) Kalaw Linan in 1985. Together they raised daughter Kathryn in Vancouver, BC, and enjoyed taking her to various extracurricular activities such as piano, ballet, music theory, ice skating, and Kumon. During her life, Virginia enjoyed extensive travels throughout Asia, Europe, and America (and delighted in collecting dolls and museum posters from countries visited). Day-to-day, Virginia was happiest when socializing with friends and family, especially over a scrumptious meal. She rarely ever turned down ice cream, even until her final days. Above all, Virginia was a devout Catholic whose faith in God never wavered. Performing corporal works of mercy were of utmost importance to her, hoping to be a source of blessings and comfort to others. She strived to live by the words of her favourite poem, Max Ehrmann's "Desiderata."
Virginia is survived by daughter Kathryn Victoria Linan (soon to be Mrs. Jacob Clark), mother Caridad, sisters Flordeliza Jimeno Lopez and Priscilla Jimeno Coloso (Danilo), nine nephews and nieces, and three grand-nephews/nieces. She was preceded in death by her father Jose (known fondly as Ching), and sister Maria Melba Jimeno Cabacungan (Fidel).
A Catholic Mass of Remembrance will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 26, 2022, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Vancouver, BC, followed by a celebration of life reception in the church basement. All are welcome.
