March 30, 1921 to December 10, 2016
Wing Lew passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in the presence of his daughters. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Anne (nee Lee), sister, Nin Ho Jung, brothers, George and Richard, survived by his daughters Carolyn (Bob) Matthews, Darlene (Pat) Ewings, sister, Violet Wong, grandchildren Chris (Linnea) Ewings, Jessica Ewings (Jeff Wilson), Sara Matthews and many nieces, nephews, extended family & friends.
Born in Vancouver, he attended Central School until age 10 and then was sent to China for 5 years to attend private school before returning at age 15 when the Japanese invaded China. That same year his father passed away and he needed to start working. He worked three jobs a day until during WWII he commenced working as a plate fitter to help build the Victory ships. Following the war years he then apprenticed to learn the dry cleaning business from Lew relatives. He valued education and hard work all his life, ensuring both his daughters had to the opportunity to graduate from university. He saved his hard earned money to start Lew’s Cleaners on Commercial Drive, a dry cleaning/coin-operated laundry business, he owned and operated for close to 40 years, as well as investing in real estate, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed playing golf in his younger years; in later years he continued to enjoy music, gardening, and in their retirement years travelling with Anne, family and their friends.
Special thanks to Dr. Kathleen Cadenhead for her compassionate care, Jocelyn Rayo, his faithful caregiver and the staff of Amica West Vancouver who provided wonderful care and helped to make his passing comfortable and peaceful. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation in his memory would be appreciated.
A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday January 21st 2017 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby, B.C. .
