He was a lively, friendly little boy with a ready smile for everyone he met. From an early age, Billy Don excelled in sports and also loved being outdoors and fishing and bird hunting, which continued throughout his life.
While in San Saba High School, he was an outstanding Armadillo football player. He was a four-year letterman and an all-district player as quarterback and running back. He was also a member of the high school track and basketball teams. He was recruited by Baylor, Rice and Dartmouth Universities and chose to play for Baylor.
During high school he also helped his father Sam both at his Gulf Service Station and his ranch in the country.
Billy Don had a big heart for kids – from little ones to young adults. He coached little league baseball with his son Devin as a player and numerous other boys. When Devin played football, he got extra ”coaching” from Dad after his games. He was also an explorer scout leader. In addition, he was a multiple sport official for ten years. He loved sports and the Dallas Cowboys.
His love and advocacy for young adults served him well with his job in the Manpower Program. In that role, he helped young people attend college free and worked with them to gain employment when they finished college. Numerous graduates are successful today because of his help and concern.
His career also included real estate, owner of two gas stations, and working for San Saba Economic Development where he was instrumental in getting the prison placed in San Saba and later was responsible for getting prisons built for other cities. Additionally, he worked for Central Texas College in Killeen writing grants and much more.
He worked with his wife Pat in operating a very successful flower shop. He loved flowers and plants and worked diligently in the greenhouse there. He also worked on a large garden at home.
He loved music, especially Elvis Presley and you could always listen and sing along with the radio when you rode with him. He liked to sing and had a good voice.
Billy Don married Pat Weathers in 1961. When she moved to San Saba, she quickly caught his eye and he proposed shortly thereafter. They were married 59 years and had two sons Devin and Paul Everett. He loved his wife and family deeply and was a devoted husband and father.
He is survived by his son Devin Everett and wife Stacy, grandsons Kellen Everett and Don Paul Everett, granddaughters Amber Everett and husband Billy Gonzales, Samantha Kate Reed and husband Jared, great grandchildren Ethan and Chassidy Gonzales, Peyton Blake and Evie Everett.
He is also survived by his sister Kathy Clausen and husband Mike and his brother Jim Bob Everett and wife Glynda as well as several nephews, a niece and several great nephews and nieces.
The family sends a special thank you to Billy Don’s niece Kelly Hobdy who is “the daughter he wished was his” for her loving care of him over the past three years.
Preceding him in death are his parents Sam and Catherine Everett, son Paul Everett, and grandson Parker Everett.
Billy Don will be remembered for his outstanding athletic ability, his advocacy for those in need, his outgoing personality and his quick wit.
We will never forget San Saba Armadillo #37.
