Roy Lee Murray, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on December 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and caregiver Mary Lou Gonzales. Born on May 25, 1943, in Kingsville, Texas, Roy was a loving husband, devoted & proud father, teddy bear uncle and super Papa to his 5 grandsons. His tender heart and kind spirit never met a stranger and he touched the lives of all who knew him.
Roy’s demeanor, integrity, character, resolve and giving nature made him special to his entire family, group of friends, community and coworkers. He had a gift of expressing the right words and making you feel like you mattered, not just in the moment, but for always. His laugh, his smile, his line of bull...all because he was truly interested in you...your day, your story and beyond.
Through a long 10+ year battle with Parkinson’s Disease Roy never lost hope or his desire to work for his community and family. His 6’3” 250lb frame was freakishly strong and he didn’t go down easily, through his illness he continued to work for HEB Pharmacy until 2020 and care for his love Kay Lynn when she became ill with breast cancer. On his days off he drove her to Houston or anywhere they needed for her treatments. The way they saw it, it was another date night opportunity and somewhere new to eat together. Papa’s walk with Christ began as a child, but meeting Kay Lynn (Finley) Murray re-centered his faith and he was baptized in Austin just before their wedding (03/16/1974) which made 50 years last year.
Roy graduated from Menard High School in 1962, where he excelled at football and basketball as well as in the classroom. He lettered in football as a sophomore and earned all district honors all 3 years as a starter, even making the all west texas squad for 1961 as a Senior. Roy would leave Menard for San Marcos to attend Southwest Texas State University. There, Roy would find his strengths were in chemistry, biology and mathematics. Roy’s achievements and body of work propelled him to be accepted to The University of Texas at Austin - College of Pharmacy and graduate in 1968. He began his professional career as a pharmacist at various pharmacies, ACE Drug Mart being his primary employer in Austin after graduation.
In 1974, Roy married Kay Lynn in Austin. Two weeks later they moved to Burnet when they purchased Haynes Pharmacy and started their family. Two children were born from this union, Grant Mitchell Murray and Clint Landon Murray. After marriage, Roy & Lynn began their family immediately and their professional journey would create Lakes Area Pharmacy (formerly Haynes) of Burnet and Lakes Medical in Austin. Roy was a registered pharmacist for 52 years and served the people of the highland lakes and Austin Proper with joy, humility and a smile. Roy’s entrepreneurial spirit would spawn other projects with his sons. Murray Logistics was founded in 2007 which Clint and wife Liz have grown to over 50 employees and for 25 years Grant & Amy operate 3 automated carwash locations and 24 ice vending locations across the hill country.
Personally, Roy was a devoted husband of almost 51 years, loving father, a proud grandfather, funny brother, the fun uncle and loyal friend. Roy’s fanaticism for all things Longhorn Athletics was 2nd to none. Lynn and Roy could be found at all home football games, OU weekend and many championship games, had the same season tickets for over 30 years and Roy was always up on what was happening down on the 40 acres. While Roy and Lynn’s plans got cut short for travel, they did take many trips in their 50 years together, including Hawaii, California, Washington, Florida, New York, The Mexican Coast, Italy and Canada. Dad’s bird hunting days were shared with many friends over the years, local and long distance trips, he loved being with you all when he still could. He loved watching his Burnet Bulldog grandsons play football and baseball like he watched their dad and uncle play for Burnet. Roy was a member of Hill Country Fellowship and we thank them for all their prayer, love and support before, during and now free from struggle and illness.
Roy is preceded in death by his love Kay Lynn, Parents Roy & Vivian, brother Arthur Lynn, sister Donna Bee Rodgers, grandparents Arthur Albert & Ida Ozella Massey Barnes and Ewing Franklin & Lula Mae Strickland Murray.
Roy leaves to honor and cherish his loving memory his children Grant Mitchell, wife Amy Murray, sons Rhett and Brooks; Clint Landon, wife Liz Murray, sons Dolton Lee, Garland Grey, and Edwin Nash. They will forever carry the legacy of Roy’s kindness, compassion, and strength. Roy was a proud Papa to five grandsons who brought him great joy and made him so proud.
Roy is also survived by his brother-in-law Troy Rodgers, nephew Steven Gleaton, nieces Tammy Gleaton Johnson, Cori Gleaton Harmel, Melissa Kay Murray, and Angela Murray Bishop. Brother-in-law Todd Lay and Sister-in-laws Diane Lay and Julie McElreath, Nephews Rob Finley IV, Devin McElreath, Blair McElreath, Alec McElreath, nieces Celeste Lay, Natalie Malone, and more than a dozen great nieces and nephews.
The family extends its thanks to the medical staff at Austin Heart Hospital, Ascension Seton Highland Lakes, Dr. David Carmack, and New Century Hospice (Brittany Morrow, RN).
