John Peter Moczerad of Allegan, Michigan, passed away at age 66 on Saturday, March 29, 2025, despite his courageous battle with cancer. John was born on May 16,1957, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Petro and Sophia Moczerad of Dearborn Heights, Michigan. John is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Kyle Baldwin (Joelle); daughter, Hillary Campbell (Billy); grandchildren Eli and Noah Baldwin, and Gavin Campbell; sister, Natalie (William); niece, Karen Humes (Jason); nephews Brian Tokarz (Michelle) and Jason Tokarz (Alida); and great-nieces and -nephews Harrison and Natalia Humes, and Andrew and Alyssa Violet Tokarz.
John graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Speech Communication and Theatre. After graduation, he worked as a theatrical technician building scenery for productions on both the east and west sides of Michigan. He moved into construction when he realized he could make better use of his knowledge to support his family. There wasn’t an area of the field John hadn’t experienced and perfected; that is why everyone who knew him trusted and respected him. And I would be remiss if I neglected to mention how every friend’s wife was jealous because they didn’t have a John Moczerad. “Look at what John did for Linda! Why can’t you do that for me? Call John.” He was revered and irreplaceable.
“PAPA”
My bond with my dad was truly special—one of a kind. We understood each other in a way few fathers and daughters could, almost like two versions of the same person. Some of my favorite moments were spent learning alongside him as we worked together. I feel incredibly lucky to have had such an amazing father.
Unsurpassed craftsmanship and creativity combined with incredible work ethic to make John an excellent builder, and he graciously shared that gift with his family and community. It was common knowledge among his grandsons that “Papa can fix anything.” During his life, he built many things. He built numerous churches and other extraordinary projects throughout his construction career. He built many houses that became wonderful homes for his family. He built cherished memories attending various sporting events and musical performances as a proud grandpa; preparing delicious meals as an excellent cook; helping with any projects that needed his expertise, ranging from creating impressive custom props for school plays and fundraisers, to any home maintenance question imaginable; and spending time with friends at his favorite place in the world: Camp 24 near Alpena. But, most importantly, he was a truly great man who built a loving family who will miss him more than words could ever express.
In lieu of flowers, John’s family would graciously accept donations to the American Cancer Society. A celebration of John’s life will be planned for later this summer. The family and Cook Funeral Home welcome memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their online guestbook.
