Roger Welling, a beloved husband, brother, father, and friend, passed away April 27, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born April 10, 1958, in Edmore, Michigan, Roger was a remarkable individual whose memory will endure forever.
Roger is survived by his cherished wife, Sonya Welling; brothers Raymond and Robert Jr. Welling; five children Shannon Welling, Joshua Welling, Karlyn Crotty, Amber Crotty, and Thomas Crotty; six grandchildren; and numerous loyal friends and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert R. and Alice Welling; sister, Jinny Lynn Welling; and brothers Ronald and Richard Welling.
Roger was known for his stubbornness and occasional eccentricity, but he also possessed an enormous heart and a delightful sense of humor. Generous, loyal, and creative, he gained knowledge and skills from various life experiences. Roger learned his mechanic and tinkering skills from working at the family garage "Welling's Service" located in Remus, Michigan, alongside his four brothers, mother, and father. Whether he was fixing cars or performing with one of his bands, Roger had an exceptional ability to fix (almost) anything.
His insatiable curiosity extended to his love of all things "nerdy," particularly his lifelong passion for music. Music played a significant role in Roger's life, and he had a remarkable talent for learning any instrument. It was through his music that he met the love of his life, Sonya Welling, while playing in his band called "Blues Dawgs."
Roger was an avid reader and enthusiast of fantasy and science fiction genres, from Star Trek to the Lord of the Rings. His enthusiasm for music, space, and technology was infectious, inspiring those around him to explore their own passions and interests.
His spirit, passion, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Roger's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, hosted by Cook Funeral and Cremation Services, located at 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guest book online.
