Vrate grew up in Byron Center and attended Byron Center Public Schools. At the age of 13, he took a special interest in music; he picked up a guitar and never put it down. Vrate was a talented self taught musician and artist. Over a span of 18 years, he worked as a contractor in construction; he was a skilled builder and carpenter. Relationships with friends and family were most significant to him. He loved to be around family and friends. It was no secret that he loved people and was loved by many. Vrate was kind, funny, loving, and humble. He touched the lives of many. He was the most loving husband, father, and son.
He will be deeply missed by the love of his life, Angelita Gill; children, Asia Gill, Aiden Gill, and Willow Anderson; parents, Joe (Denise) Gill and Jalene (Dave) Anderson; brothers, Greg (Lisa) Gill and Clayton (Jenny) Gill; nephews, Nathan Gill and Isaac Gill; nieces, Kimberly Gill and Elise Gill; paternal grandparents, Rita Williams and John Gill; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents John and Bonnie VanDyke.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the needs of the family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff in the intensive care unit at Butterworth Hospital for their care and kindness.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Cook Funeral Home in Byron Center, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2024 at the funeral home, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
