Predeceased by his father Francis Henry Pellatt, mother Lillian Pellatt, sister June, and recently brother Peter.
Left to cherish his memory are Pauline (wife of 63 years), daughter Karen (Alan Carson), son Kevin (Lisa Tarrant, son Quinn Power/wife Sarah), granddaughter Mallory Springall (Travis) and great grandson Elliott Springall; brother Ron and sister Lily in England along with their families.
Pauline and Alan were married on August 15, 1959, and emigrated to Canada in July 1967 to Marystown, Newfoundland, then moved to Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton NS, and finally settled in Cambridge (Galt) in 1970.
Alan served his Millwright apprenticeship at sea and travelled around the world in the Merchant Navy to many ports-of-call. He worked at the shipyards in Marystown and Port Hawkesbury, then in Cambridge worked at Babcock & Wilcox Canada, Canadian General Towers, and finished his career with the Millwright Local #1916, from 1975 until his retirement in 1999.
Alan loved to golf, bowl, play cards, darts and dominoes. His love of music and dancing started in his teens with Pauline, which they enjoyed throughout their married life. They had a strong circle of friends which they formed over the years from the United Kingdom club, trailer park, golfing and devoted neighbours. Alan especially loved building, woodworking and basically fixing anything he could get his hands on. Even though Alan was stubborn and strong-willed, he was equally a gentle soul to Pauline, Karen and Kevin. Most importantly, he loved his family and would do anything for them.
At the age of 70, Alan developed early onset dementia and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in February 2014. Alzheimer’s did not take away his personality or ability to connect with people.
In March 2022, Alan moved to Stirling Heights Long-Term Care Home. The home was accepting and everyone immediately loved Alan for his socializing, quick wit, one-liners, whistling and sense of humour. He could often be found chatting away at the nurses’ station at night when he couldn’t sleep. In the summer while sitting outside in the fresh air, he would greet everyone who came to the home, whether a worker, essential caregiver, or other family members. He had an impact on everyone, and everyone always smiled and said hello to him.
Pauline, Karen and Kevin would like to thank all the staff, personal support workers, and nurses at Stirling Heights Long-Term Care home for their care and compassion. They treated Alan as one of the family.
Even though we are heartbroken, we find comfort in knowing that you passed peacefully and can rest. You’ll now be able to kick up a storm dancing and whistling and enjoying a glass of wine or a pint with your dad, mum, sister and brother. We are blessed with so many treasured memories.
We are forever grateful for the life you provided us and for having the courage to move a young family from England to Canada. We love you and send our eternal love to you in the next chapter of your journey.
