The Dragonfly Story Down below the surface of a quiet pond live a little colony of water bugs. They were a happy colony, living far away from the sun. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances or interruptions. Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow bugs would climb the stem of a lily pad and would never be seen again. They knew that when this happened, their friend would be gone forever, and assumed the worst for her well-being. Then, one day, a little water bug couldn't resist the urge to climb up that stem. However, she was determined that she would not leave forever. She would come back to tell her friends what she had seen at the top. Up, up, up the little water bug went. And as the others watched, she disappeared from sight! When she reached the top, she climbed out of the water and on to the surface of the lily pad. She was so tired, and the sun felt so warm and good that she felt she must take a nap. As she slept, a miracle occurred! Her body transformed, and when she woke, she had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a body designed for flying. So fly she did! And as she soared high above, she saw the beauty of a whole new world and a whole new, better way of life that she hadn't known existed! She couldn't wait to share this news with her water bug friends below the surface of the pond. She swooped down to the water, but hit the surface and bounced away. Her new body could not go down into the water. She could not get back to share her good news with her friends. "I can't go back!" she said in dismay. "And even if I could go back, no one would recognize me in my new body!" And just then she realized that the time would come for her friends to join her. Someday they too would become dragonflies. And only then would they too know what she now knew. So she raised her wings and swooped and soared up, up, up, happily into her wonderful new world of sun and air.
