She is survived by her son Sam Brunton-Lewis (Laura), granddaughter Megan Brunton-Lewis, niece Victoria Lywood and stepsons Chris and Chareif Lewis. Predeceased by her husband Cuthbert David Lewis, sisters Helen Marion, and Evelyn Lywood, and niece Bonnie Marion.
Bernice passed at Hilltop Manor long term Care Home and the family would like to thank them for the caring nature they treated Bernice in the last years of her life.
Bernice was born the youngest of 3 sisters to Henry and Margaret Brunton. She lived her full life in Galt. She loved her family and friends. In turn she was truly loved by her family and friends. She loved to laugh and could find the humour in many things. She was an avid reader, loved sitcoms, SCTV, SNL and also was a long time watcher of Coronation Street.
Bernice was a teacher for the Waterloo County board of education for over 37 years. She worked at Centennial Public, Alison Park and finished her career at Clemens Mills. She made many friends during that time.
While caring for her young son and maintaining a full-time career Bernice went back to school to earn her university degree. She achieved that degree from the University of Waterloo in 1984.
In her retirement Bernice volunteered at the Trinity Community Table for many years and was recognized for her efforts by the United Way and Member of Provincial Parliament. Her capacity to give and care for others is a hallmark of her life.
Bernice was a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She obtained the Order of the Rose and reached the 60-year membership milestone in 2023! In her retirement, she often held meetings at her home for local members and on one of the rare occasions she would raise her voice, it would be to shoo her husband and son away from the treats put out before the meetings would start.
As a testament to who she was at the core, as Alzheimer's progressed the last phrase she would still say on occasion was “I love you” sometimes followed by her familiar laugh.
What she did for others is too numerous to list. But what she did for me, though also too numerous to list, can be summed up by saying she was an amazing mother in every sense of the word who will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Bernice on Friday, December 8, 2023 from 1 - 3 p.m. at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge (519-621-1650).
In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you donate to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
