Passed away peacefully in his 93rd year at St. Andrew’s Terrace, Cambridge on September 28, 2025, surrounded by family. Brian was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on December 20, 1932, to Lilian Victoria Gibson (Steele) and William Beaton Gibson.
Family was everything to Brian. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 64 years, Ann Gibson (Demarte), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and devotion. He will be deeply missed by his children, Marie (Steven Kiropoulos) and Brian Jr. (Trudy). He was a cherished Grandad to his five grandchildren: Evan (Alexa Brennan), Liam (Andrea Bergeron), Matthew, Taylor (Codi Sousa) and Daniel. He was an adored great-grandfather to Isabella, Avianna and Melina. Survived by dear sister Brenda in England, sisters-in-law Jill Gibson and Donna Demarte, both of Cambridge. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews in Canada, England and Trinidad.
Besides his parents, Brian was predeceased by sisters Grace, Jean and Christine, as well as brothers Alexander, David and Keith. He was also predeceased by brothers-in-law John Demarte, Carmen Demarte and Angelo Demarte and great-grandson Adrian Sousa.
Brian arrived in Canada on July 1, 1956, and settled in Galt. He enjoyed a 32-year career with Petro Canada (formerly British Petroleum), Trafalgar Refinery, Oakville, Ontario, before his retirement in 1990. Following a second career with the Ontario Jockey Club, he fully retired in 1997. He and Ann enjoyed travelling, but it was the time they spent with their children and grandchildren that brought them the greatest joy.
Brian loved sports, but soccer was his passion, and he rarely missed watching his beloved Southampton Saints play. Having played for several clubs in England, as well as the Galt Eagles and Italia Galt locally, Brian continued his involvement in soccer as a well-respected coach for over 40 years. His commitment to soccer was recognized in 2011 when he was awarded a Meritorious Service Award by the Ontario Soccer Association, reflecting his contribution to soccer, his commitment to the community, dedication to coaching and the promotion and leadership of the game in Ontario.
An avid reader, Brian also loved games and puzzles and was a wonderful cook. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, his boisterous laugh and his incredible sense of humour. His was a life well-lived.
The family wishes to extend great appreciation to both the staff at St. Andrew’s Terrace and Cambridge Memorial Hospital for their extraordinary care.
