Mr. Van Horne was a wonderful teacher and I am saddened to hear of his passing.

I grew up across the street from Garnet. He was a very good friend through grades 8 to grade 13. We spent a lot of time together attending basketball games, Woodstock Sr. A and Navy Vet hockey games. In our spare time we played a lot of ping pong, pool, hockey (on backyard rinks) and a little bit of hunting with Garnet’s father. We rode our motorcycles together and I went with him when he was shopping for his first car. Garnet also arranged for me to go on my first date so I also have him to thank for that. Garnet was a good friend and a fun guy to be around with his intelligence and dry wit. I like to think we helped each other solve the difficult teenage years and my life would have been quite different without his friendship.  

Although we hadn’t seen each other since high school, I have thought of Garnet often including when I now drive past our former homes on Clarke Street in Woodstock. I am so sorry to hear the sad news. Needless to say, I will continue to think of, and hold in my heart, my memories of my good friend Garnet. 

Sincere condolences to our cousins & their families...  so sorry to hear of Garnet's passing.   He & I always shared a love for Math...  many fun memories of spending time with he & Aunt Barb many years ago ...  love and hugs to all of you.  May he rest in peace and live on in your hearts.   Xo

I remember so many times, where me and angel would meet up after school on fridays, and garnet would take me, her and our friends to the dance, or all the times that he made us snacks, breakfast. Going for long walks with baxter, or even stella. Rest easy garnet. We'll forever miss you, and love you.

Trip east to visit uncle Bill and Aunt Phyllis. Came back through the states(Maine) 

I met Garnet through his son Ryan when he would host poker games.  He was very knowledgeable in the game and quite a good player too.  One time we played all night and eventually switched to the game of Cribbage.  As the years went by we had many games and lots of laughs. When there was a game, we could always count of Garnet to show up and bring his infamous deviled eggs.  Without a doubt, he will be missed.  Rest in peace my good sir. 

Mr. VanHorne was my high school math teacher in 1984/85.  Admittedly a long time ago now but to my recollection, he was a great teacher, easy to learn from and helpful when you needed it.  My sincere condolences to his family.  May your cherished memories console you now and always.

The memory I'll never forget was the first time I played poker with Garnet. I thought I knew the rules of the game but I couldn't have been more wrong, as I found out in the first 10 minutes. Garnet pointed out my mistakes and my lack of poker rules/knowledge.  At first I almost took his teachings as rude. However, I quickly found out that all he wanted to do was teach me and it came from a genuine and kind place.  I made it my mission going forward to beat Garner, no matter how much poker knowledge I lacked. Over time I lost more money to Garnet then anyone else, however my day came and while I didn't knock Garnet out I won 2-3 hands against him and I felt accomplished.  He congratulated me and told me I did a good job playing those hands. It was the finest poker compliment I've ever received. I will miss Garnet and his teachings, I'll miss his delicious devil eggs. I saw Garnet as a kind soul who was eager to teach and enjoyable to be around, he will be greatly missed.

Where to start…I don’t have many memories but the ones that stick in my head is that not long after dating Martin did I figure out that you supplied my math class back in high school.  I remembered that quirky eye roll and that’s how I figured it out 

Another memory is all the times you’d bring Martin and i a tray of snacks when we were sitting outside in the backyard. 

And of course I cannot forget to mention your delicious devilled eggs. They barely lasted 5 minutes. 

You will be missed by many and forever in our hearts. Rip Garnet. 

Very sorry to hear of Garnet's passing. I only knew him from Avenue Road Baptist Church but had great respect for him. Our son Scott says he was his favourite math teacher.

I always loved how you never really knew if Uncle Garnet was serious about what he just said or was teasing. Then his little devilish grin would start to show; it always made me laugh.

He helped me with my Math course when I went back to college. I will never forget the look of exasperation when I couldn't figure out something that I should have been 
able to figure out (math and I have a longstanding hate relationship!) and he said 'Well maybe they won't ask about this on the test.' LOL I always appreciated he took the time to come and try and help me (I passed btw, thanks to him).

I always loved chatting with him when we did see each other and he will be dearly missed.

Our condolences to Garnet's family.  We knew Garnet in the university days, when we attended basketball games together.  This picture (with our friend Martin) is from a Christmas party in 1976. 

Rest easy good Sir...... Back in the day you were my teacher.  I bet we were not that easy to deal with back then. I do remember you as one whom never raised a voice or temper with us. Thank you for helping  shape the not so great kids we were in to better adults we became. Sorry to the family and friends for the loss of a kind man.....

Garnet was a colleague and mentor of mine at Glenview Park in the Math department.  He was patient, calm and considerate of all of his students and coworkers.  “There’s no such thing as a ‘hard’ math problem, some problems just take longer than others to find out why they’re easy” -GVH.   He became a good friend and poker pal.  I enjoyed our evenings driving out to regularly attend Ritter’s Card Room with Garnet.  A wise, kind, and gentle man with a rapier wit and keen intellect.  I will miss him.  Dave

Uncle Garnet made THE best bacon and egg breakfast. If he was at cottage or grandma's house he was the breakfast maker. He told me the secret to his eggs and I still use his technique today. I would tell but he told me its a secret lol. RIP Uncle Garnet you will be missed by many. Until we meet again Allison 

You were like a dad to me and I will always remember the great times we had up at the cottage. Love you forever and will see you when I get there.

Easy.  I was hosting the Crown and Anchor at Tyler's stag and doe.

I had never met Garnett before but knew him to be a math teacher and (like my own father) a general ball buster.

So there I was trying to keep track of bets and inevitably made a mistake when Garnett, without offering even a moment  of patience, demanded to know who put the idiot in charge of the math games.

It wasnt more than a second or two of wondering who would be so impatient and impertinent at a fundraiser before I half scared half eagerly asked, "Tyler's dad?" Then we both started laughing like kids.

A great human as can be gleaned from his survivors. Rest easy Garnett.

My deepest condolences to all of Garnets family. Our poker games and all night cribbage tournaments won't be the same without you. Rest in peace Garnet, hopefully you are playing some cards with the best of them up there!

Garnet and I played poker together on Sundays and a few times at my house. We had great conversations of his time teaching at Glenview and discovered that he was a supply teacher for both of my kids. He always brought his famous devilled eggs to my poker games! I'm so sad that he is gone too soon. Condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Garnet you will be missed. I enjoyed playing poker and learning about the game from you. To be honest I probably learned more than I ever wanted or needed to know.

My sincere condolences to Garnet's family during this trying time. I met Garnet during our student days at the University of Waterloo and remember trips to basketball games and to his family cottage near Dorset. Although we drifted apart over time, the memories of our younger days are special memories.

My condolences to Garnet’s family. Garnet was my math teacher at Glenview Park SS. I really do not remember too much of Mr. Van Horne. I asked him if I was in his class. He replied “I only remember the good and bad students”. What I do know of Garnet was that I hosted a poker game at the Cave, on Friday nights and at my place on Sunday afternoons. Garnet played mostly on Sundays. I think he preferred Sundays because he would bring his beer. He was always welcomed. All of us, who played cards with Garnet, enjoyed his company. I will be playing cards Sunday; it will be hard to break this news.
