Surrounded by love Jean passed peacefully at Hilltop Manor on Wednesday, April 27th in her 96th year. Beloved wife of 70 years to the late Henry Briggs. Loving mother to Carolyn (Pam 2008), Russell (Julie) and Terry (Sandy). Cherished Nannie/Grandma to Amanda, Alyson (Josh), Zarena (Brent), Mirrelle (Neil), David (Delia), Cori (Clayton), Holly (Chad); 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Jean was born in the small fishing village of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, one of six children. Her father was a church deacon, Postmaster, and owned the only bus line in Pouch Cove. She attended a one room school before moving to St John’s to attend Memorial College. While boarding in St John’s, she met Henry, the love of her life, who was stationed in St. John’s with the Navy. They married in 1945 and moved to Hamilton, Ontario. Jean loved to read and sing, and play hymns on the piano. Her faith was central to her life and she was actively involved in the churches she attended as well as volunteering for many different organizations in the community. The United Church Women (UCW) was very dear to her and she was recognized for the level of her participation with that group. Thank you to the many neighbours and friends who supported Jean and Henry, allowing them to continue living independently for so many years. Thanks also to Hilltop Manor staff in the Blair Wing who helped comfort and care for Jean for the last 2 years. Cremation has taken place. To honour Jean’s wishes, relatives and friends will be received at the T. Little Funeral Home and Cremation Centre; 223 Main St, Cambridge (519-623-1290) on Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 1 – 2 p.m. and a Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
