John was the beloved husband of Darlene (née Williams), with whom he shared 60 wonderful years of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Loving father to Valerie (Duane) McEwin and Patty Crosby (Ian Barker). Cherished grandpa to Miranda (Ray), Levi, Kimberly and proud great-grandpa to Felix, Calvin, and Rupert.
John was a dear brother to Violet MacDonald, Lorrie Browne, Lewie Kennedy, Roger (Ruthanne) Kennedy, and brother-in-law to Ken MacDonald, Carl Johnson, Bobby Browne, Myrna (Peter) Trenholm, and Cathy (Chris) Lawless.
He will be fondly remembered by his large extended family, many friends, and those who were lucky enough to call him “grandpa”, whether by blood or simply by love. Children gravitated to John, often stopping by just to chat or grab a sucker from his ever-ready stash.
John was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and spent his early years between the shores of PEI and Pugwash, Nova Scotia. He worked on fishing boats in Pugwash and on farms in Prince Edward Island before eventually settling in Ontario, where he devoted more than 40 years to the construction industry. He was known for his incredible work ethic and pride in a job well done.
John had a generous heart and a ready hand, always willing to help a neighbour or stranger alike. He had a deep love for the Toronto Maple Leafs, a passion for playing music and his guitar, and was well-known for his impressive hat collection. He brought warmth, humour, and kindness wherever he went.
Predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Frances Kennedy (née Auld) and his sister Annie Johnson, John’s memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrew Street, Cambridge, Ontario.
As expressions of sympathy, donations made in John’s memory would be gratefully appreciated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
