Mel was born in Comox, BC on January 7, 1945 to Jacob Jack Penner and Helen Ester Penner (Enns). His growing up years were spent in Black Creek where he attended school at Tsolum Elementary and Courtenay High School.
He met the love of his life, Shirley Green, while working at a gas station in Courtenay. They married in 1966 and had two children, Kerry and Kristie and enjoyed living near Stories Beach since 1972. Mel earned a trade in automotive electrical and he and Shirley opened Mel Penner Automotive in 1980. He spent many days on the docks working on fish boats and attained his pilot’s license, purchased a Cessna 172 and thoroughly enjoyed flying into many logging camps along the west coast.
Mel enjoyed the outdoors, a good backyard bonfire, tinkering in his shop, hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. He played guitar, enjoyed country music, old western shows, golfing and playing cribbage. He was caring and giving and wanted to help others. He was a proud family man and was the biggest supporter and fan of his kids and grandkids, attending numerous figure skating competitions, band concerts, hockey and baseball games, dance recitals and graduation ceremonies.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Dale. He leaves behind his loving wife, Shirley, son Kerry (Alynne), daughter Kristie Cross (Brent) and grandchildren Hayden & Markus Cross, Hannah, Evan & Nathan Penner. He is also survived by his sisters Beverley Dueck, Donna Emmerson and Sherrie Pawluk.
His silly jokes and infectious smile will be missed.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude for excellent care from Dr Veerapen, the CR Fire Department, Paramedics, CR ER Doctors and Nurses, the ICU staff at Victoria General Hospital as well as sincere thanks to many friends, family and neighbors for reaching out. A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
