It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Victoria Jean Stubbs, known to many as Vicky.
Vicky is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 55 years, Tony; her daughters Sharilyn Irving (Duane Riddoch) and Lana Gale; and her son Ian Stubbs (Carly Clarkson). She was a proud and deeply devoted grandmother to Cole and Jaxson Irving and Tyson Gale, who were truly her world. She is also survived by her former son-in-law Jason Irving; her sister Marilyn Trigg; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Vicky was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Audrey Grisdale; her brothers Gerry and Ted Grisdale; her sister Neila Russell; her parents-in-law Tom and Betty Stubbs; and her brothers-in-law Richard Trigg and Blair Morris.
Vicky will be remembered for her bright smile, boisterous laugh, and friendly, outgoing personality. She was a phenomenal cook, baker, and cake decorator who delighted in feeding and caring for others. Loving and generous with her time, she was always ready to help wherever she was needed. She rarely missed a sporting event, faithfully cheering on her children and grandchildren from the sidelines. Family dinners and time with her Trefoil ladies were cherished occasions, and Friday nights often found her at the Brindy, cheering for the CR Storm alongside friends who became family.
Born in Calgary, Vicky was raised primarily in Edmonton, Alberta. After earning her Physical Education degree from the University of Alberta, she moved to Thunder Bay, where she taught PE at a local high school. Drawn west, she relocated to Vancouver and began working at the YMCA. It was there that she met Tony. Following a whirlwind eight-month courtship, they were married in 1970, and—true to his promise—Tony “gave her the world,” first whisking her away to Nimpkish Lake Camp.
Vicky worked as a substitute teacher in Woss before starting their family. In 1979, the family moved back to Edmonton, where she lovingly ran lunch and after-school care programs in her home for many children. After settling in Campbell River in 1986, Vicky earned her HCA certificate and began working as an Activity Aide at Sunshine Lodge in the old Campbell River Hospital. She dedicated many years to this role, including time in Prince George and at Yuculta Lodge.
Following her retirement, Vicky continued her lifelong commitment to service by volunteering with the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary, serving as President of both the local and North Island Auxiliaries. She also volunteered extensively throughout her life—in schools, as a ball coach, and as a Brownie and Girl Guide leader while her children were young. Giving to others was simply who she was.
In keeping with Vicky’s wishes, no service will be held. Those who wish to honour her memory are invited to donate to the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary.
