Dear Carrol: I know that you are devastated by the passing of your father. He helped you when you needed it and you returned those blessings many times over giving of your time, and loving care, making sure that he received the professional care that kept him going when others couldn’t. I remember John fondly. In spite of how he was feeling, he was always the positive energy in the room with his great sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. I hope that you can be consoled with many memories of his loving kindness towards you. Blessings to you and your family.

I first met Mr. Toole—affectionately known as Grandpa to what felt like our entire soccer program—when I transferred to La Cañada High School before my junior year. Like most new kids, I was just trying to figure everything out… and then I noticed this eccentric older gentleman walking around the field in a onesie.

At first I wasn’t quite sure what I was witnessing. One minute he was helping seed the field, the next he was working the referees like a seasoned negotiator, and somewhere in between he was charming (and slightly hitting on) my girlfriend — all during the same game. I quickly learned this legend was Sawicki’s grandfather.

From that moment on, he became Grandpa to all of us.

Whether it was high school or later in college, he was always there—cheering, joking, supporting the team, and making everyone feel like family. His incredible onesies became iconic, but what really made him unforgettable was his heart. He treated us like we were his own grandkids, and that meant the world.

I feel incredibly lucky to have known him through both programs. He was truly one of a kind, and the memories of him on the sidelines will always make me smile.

Sending my love and condolences to the entire family. He was a very special man, and he will be deeply missed.

Uncle John was a force of nature—full of love and laughter.  
He is deeply loved and will be deeply missed. The world is not the same without him.
