WHEATCROFT, Maxine Hazel- Resident of Manhattan Beach, CA passed away peacefully at her home on July 22, 2018 at the age of 90 surrounded by her family and dog Molly. She was born May 19, 1928 in Los Angeles to Hazel Beatrice Treaster and Pinckney William Baker. She was the youngest and last surviving of her siblings P.W. Buck Baker, Jr., Racine Bell, and James W. Baker. In search of a better life the family had left Oklahoma in the 1920’s. They stopped briefly in Arizona where they grew watermelons and picked cotton and eventually settled in Glendale, CA by the riverbed in “Toonerville”. Following graduation from John Marshall High School, Maxine married her high school sweetheart George Wheatcroft in 1948. He taught her how to drive in a roadster, using the two foot racing method up and down the hills of Echo Park. They settled in Manhattan Beach in 1957 where they raised their children. She was an active Girl Scout Leader and Team Parent with Little League Baseball. Maxine started working in the cafeteria at Grandview Elementary and retired in 1988 from the Manhattan Beach School District as Cafeteria Manager. She moved to Cedaredge, Colorado to be close to her brother Buck and her new home on Surface Creek. She loved arranging fresh and later silk flower arrangements. She traveled the area antiquing and collecting glassware. In 1991 she bought the historic Garnethurst Residence in Delta, CO where she resided for over 20 years. She was a member of the Friends of the Library and on the Board of the Delta County Museum. Due to deteriorating health she returned back to California, spending her final months in her home on Walnut Avenue in Manhattan Beach. “Aunt Mackey” was much loved by those who spent time with her. She is survived by a Daughter- Linda Joyce Wheatcroft (Jay Ireland) and Grandson Shane Loftis (Maria Saiz-Loftis) and Son- George Craig Wheatcroft and Grandchildren Kyle, Alissa, Derek, Rochelle and Great-grandchildren Logan, Katie, Evan and Travis. Memorial Donations may be made to your local Alzheimer’s Foundation. Inurnment will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA in the Columbarium of Tranquil Memories. The family will gather at the graves of Maxine’s parents and walk into the Courts of Remembrance. A Celebration of Life and Reception will be held immediately following at 3:30pm at her Nephew’s home in Sherwood Forest. Linda and Craig are appreciative of the care and visits and want all family and friends to know they are invited to attend.
