I am just seeing it’s the 1st anniversary of Uncle Ralphs passing. I was privileged to meet him, Uncle Buster and all the Cheltenham family through my father in law Peter McGonagle. So many great stories and memories. Such loving friends, they were family. So sad they are not with us today, but their stories will live on forever. Sending all my love.

We can’t believe that it has been a year this week that Ralph sadly passed away. We are so grateful that Ralph has been remembered so fondly by his Scarrott Metallurgical ‘family’, friends and neighbours. 

We feel so much closer to Ralph now that we are able to visit and lay flowers at his plaque, next to Mum Mabel, at Cheltenham cemetery.

Thank you all for keeping his memory alive.

Uncle Jones, will always be remembered in our hearths.

Uncle, was like a library, filled with stories of various eras, he was a well knowledge individual that had the answer for every question asked.  Whether he had the answer or he made it up, he always gave you an answer. 
one funny story that I like to share is that one day, I arrived to work at Scarrott and his office door was closed but he had the music full blast as he was listening to Spanish singer  ( Julio Iglesias) and I as opened the door to check on him, I noticed that he was actually singing in Spanish. 
I will never forget that !!!

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ralph’s passing.  I was his neighbor two-doors down on Keswick for 18 wonderful years from 1978 to 1996. We became very close friends and Ralph became a part of all Langley family gatherings.  

Weekend breakfasts, garage sale searches, jogging, listening to my piano playing after, perhaps,  too many glasses of wine, and backyard barbecues became a regular habit.  He loved jazz and big band  music too!

Ralph was “up” on many subjects and he fit in easily with all occasions.  He knew all my family from nephews to my parents and their siblings. He was part of family.  Additionally, he tracked my decades-long career at Neiman Reed Lum as I did his later-life career with Scarrott Metallurgical. 

Ralph was truly a great friend. I regret that I was not there for him at the end.  Ralph, you were unique and genuine. I thank you for your treasured friendship.  To Dave and Jan— thank you for being such an inspiration to his life here in Los Angeles.  

I salute you Ralph Jones for the people you brought into my life and all the wonderful memories.

R.I.P. Ralph...great rugby memories and always respected you as a gentleman. After rugby we spoke a few times but time does go bye before we know it. I'm sadden we had not spoken in 30 years since I had left Southern California...but  I believe we will meet again.

Oh Ralph...

For anyone in our neighborhood who knew Ralph Jones...and he was well known...they'd say he was a lovely, kind, gentle, friendly, social, English fella.  He loved his dogs Victoria and Albert dearly, whom passed a few years ago. So he would always come out and say hello to my dogs when we walked past his house.  Always a good conversationalist and never hesitated to lend a helping hand.  He was a class act.

I live in the house directly behind Ralph's house for the past 7 1/2 years and have enjoyed many conversations with this lovely man.   About 2 weeks ago, he came by my house to check on me...saying he hadn't seen my patio lights on recently from his back yard and wanted to make sure I was okay or hadn't moved.   I was in the middle of my work day and had a conference call about to start.  We chatted for 10 mins.  How I wish now, that I would have just walked you back to your house that day.  

I've enjoyed reading some of these memories posted.  What a lovely man indeed.  Rest in peace sir.

My last visit with you was just after DAD, Peter McGonagle, had passed in 2013, when I had my lay over in Los Angeles ... and you took me to your beloved restaurant the Buggy Whip before it closed its doors for good, and then proudly showed me off to the employees at Uncle Busters factory!

Uncle Ralph was a dear friend to my parents Pete and Pat, and the McGonagle family.  When my parents moved to Baja California, Mexico we were lucky to have Uncle Ralph, Buster and Dave Wright their best friends visit.  This photo is from one of those visits.  Uncle Ralph and "Grandpa Pete" will be hanging out again, talking about the old days, water polo, football, Cheltenham and drinking a pint or two together.  We will forever keep the memories of Uncle Ralph in our hearts.  Sending our condolences and all our love to your family.  

Obituary for Ralph  


What can I say about Ralph. He was my big brother and also a father figure, due to the 19 year age gap! My young memories include him taking me sledging in the winter, going to the Alstone baths when he was training and watching the water polo matches on a Friday night. Saturday mornings I accompanied him to the Cadena Restaurant for morning coffee and he sat me with all the young ladies – much to my embarrassment!  


On one occasion he was unable to take me home after a water polo match (had other commitments no doubt!) so put me on the back of Ken Green’s motorbike, much to the horror of my mother, Mabel. 


As children Nathan and Gemma were enthralled to think that Uncle Ralph lived in Los Angeles and had a swimming pool in the back yard! He really spoiled them when he visited for Christmas, arriving weighed down with a huge suitcase full of gifts for us all. 


On his annual trip back to Cheltenham he could often be seen riding around on his bike visiting various friends and always ended up at the Old Pat’s clubhouse to catch up with the gossip. 


Ralph was larger than life, enjoyed his team sports and lived life to the full. He had a love for his dogs, Victoria and Albert also Charlie and Louise.  


Ralph, you will be greatly missed by all your family in Cheltenham. With love from Steve, Pat, Nathan and Gemma.

You’ve watched me grow up as well as my two children, we’ve shared meals together, conversations, simple hellos and good laughs. My heart will always have a special place for you and your warm smile. I remember the day we finally met in person, at the office just before heading out to the old Buggy Whip. It was the first time I’d met Dave face to face as well. When I asked for “Ralph” he escorted me to your reception area and introduced you as “Uncle Ralph.” I said, “Well, I see who got the height in the family!” We all had a great laugh as you chuckled. Little did I know you were closer than brothers and from that moment you were always and fondly, Uncle Ralph. May your memory be eternal for all of us who love you hold you dear.

Our Dear Friend Ralph,
I can still remember moving into our home on Keswick Street on  February 14, 1998 and it was pouring rain! You came over to make introductions and offer your help. The next visit was several weeks later at our yard sale. Your leg length had the same inseam and you started collecting all my trousers! We soon found you could wear my suits, too! We had a good laugh! Through the years we shared many Sunday dinners, coffee runs, stories and needed advice. You were always there. Thank You for making the trip to Vancouver, BC. It made an unforgettable day perfect! We wish you God's Greatest Blessings and look forward to seeing you again our friend!

Ralph, you have left me with many great memories over the past 65 years or so. From the early water polo days at the Alstone Baths, to camping in France and Spain with Buster, and later, the '52 Buick Special “one way” 1961 road trip from Pacoima to Acapulco Mex. with Messrs Jones, Scarrott, and Lockey.
Ralph, without doubt you provided the luck that allowed the four occupants to crawl out of two major car crashes unscathed, one crash outside Mexico City and the other near Quedgley Glos following a polo match in Bristol c1956.
Ralph, most importantly during the many years that we spent in Canoga Pk and Chatsworth, you were there as “Uncle” Ralph for our three daughter's early years.
We will miss you, your sense of humour and friendship.

Uncle Ralph,
From my first solo trip to L.A back in 1980 to my last in 2010, you have always been a huge part of the Scarrott family that I loved to visit, 
From throwing our suitcases into the back of the truck at LAX,
A welcome or farewell drink at the Buggy Whip, 
Your quirky finds at garage sales, that are still in homes in Cheltenham as well as L.A., 
To chatting around the dining table, reminiscing. 
I can still see you now on the bicycle you used to ride on your visits back to Cheltenham , cycle clips on as you visited friends, family & the occasional stop at the Old Pats,
You will be missed, but never forgotten,

Today, we received the very sad news of the death of a lifelong friend, in America, Ralph Jones. For the last 70 plus years, from when we knew each other at the Cheltenham Swimming and Water-Polo Club, to just a few weeks ago talking to him on the telephone about the memories we have shared, the miles travelled together to matches all over the UK and Europe, and more recently to Mexico to visit an old team-mate and friend, Peter McGonagle and his wife Patsy, it has been more than a privilege to have had him as more than a friend, but more like a member of a very close-knit family.
 
His generosity to all who have known him at Smiths Industries, the Old Pat’s Rugby Club, Cheltenham Swimming and Water-polo Club, Cheltenham North Rugby Club and numerous other sporting associations will never be forgotten.
 
Any time he came back to Cheltenham for a visit, which up until very recently was on a very regular basis, he only had to walk down the Promenade, meeting old friends and work colleagues, for him to realise that it was as if he had never left us to live in California, USA
 
Together with Dave Scarrott, Bob Fairbanks and Mike Shea, they founded Scarrott Metalurgical in Los Angeles, California, and our thoughts are with all of the staff as they come to terms with his loss.
 
Because of the current situation, family and close friends will be unable to travel to his funeral, but I am sure that all of us will be thinking of him, his brother Steve and sister-in-law Pat and their family in this tragic time.

Uncle  Ralph , we appreciated you being apart of our family for so long. My dad is heart broken 80 years of friendship is along time.  
I remember how much we used to laugh riding into work together blasting Sinatra or jersey boys, i also remember how much you loved to listen to the spanish  music radio stations. The memories will turn into stories and we’ll continue to share them. You were unique, tough as nails and a heart of gold. we will miss you dearly.
