Benjamin David Soble, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Canton, MA, due to complications from COVID-19. Born at home in Mattapan to Isador and Rose Soble on April 27, 1926, he lived in various sections of Boston before moving to Needham, where he lived for fifty years.
At the center of Ben’s life were his family and their well-being. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 70 years, Thelma Zeitler Soble, also of Canton, and by his adoring daughters and sons-in-law: Carol E. Soble (Michael Shibley) of Takoma Park, MD; Joan S. Soble (Scott Ketcham) of Quincy; and Lauren J. Amidon (Ron) of Revere. Ben also leaves his devoted grandchildren, Rabbi Daniel S. Shibley (fiancée Dr. Devora Isseroff) and Beth S. Getzandanner (husband Kenneth), and his great-grandson Adam J. Getzandanner. Ben was also much loved by his sister-in-law Erline Soble; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Myrna Z. and Howard Schwack; and brother-in-law Martin Selig (late Elayne Z. Selig), as well as by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children. Ben was predeceased by his brothers Henry, Joseph, and Eugene, whom he always missed.
A graduate of Boston Latin School (1943) and Harvard College (1947), he was an active alumnus of both institutions. Ben enjoyed telling stories about his US Navy and overnight camp experiences. He was enthusiastic about classical music, golf, tennis, and televised sports; in addition, he read and learned avidly throughout his life, and was a favorite of his daughters’ friends.
Due to the pandemic, services and shiva will be private.
The family will always be grateful to the Orchard Cove staff, whose constant care, concern, and kindness reflected their professionalism, generous spirits, and genuine affection for Ben.
Donations in Ben’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
