He is survived by Phyllis Raider (Kovacs), his loving wife of 54 years. Father to Alan (Jennifer), David (Jessica), grandchildren Peter, Evan, Abby, Beck, Jim, and Aaron, sister Lisa Doran (Thomas) brother Bruce (Deborah), and many nieces and nephews. Ed grew up in Sharon, and was raised by Herbert and Martha Raider.
He was surrounded by the family restaurant business as a kid, where he developed an expertise scooping ice cream. As a young man Ed met Phyllis at UMass-Amherst at freshman orientation and they married in 1967. Ed was not suited for college life, and instead served two years in the Air Force overseas during the Vietnam War. Ed and Phyllis took over the family business in 1979, which had morphed into the Sharon Motel (later Sharon Inn). Together, they welcomed guests from all over the world and led a group of committed employees for 32 years before retiring. In retirement, he enjoyed seeing his grandchildren flourish, attending countless sports games and dance recitals, and volunteering as a SHINE counselor, helping senior citizens navigate the Medicare enrollment process. Ed is remembered by friends and family for his appreciation of the finer things in life, as he always enjoyed eating a delicious meal, drinking a glass of wine or scotch, tailgating in style with friends at the Patriots games, traveling to Italy (many times) and listening to great jazz.
