I had the privilege of working with George at QHS from 2001 until his retirement.  He was a tremendous resource to me as a new teacher at QHS.  I knew I could always rely on George to help me tackle issues like how to teach the civil war in 2 weeks or for local history topics to add into my curriculum such as Thomas Morton or the evacuation of Boston during the revolution.  (I still have folders of resources he gave me and use them to this day.). Every year when I'm looking through my files and see his handwriting I'm thankful for having had such a wonderful and positive influence in my early years at QHS and try my best to pay it forward.

Most importantly I loved my conversations with George at lunch and in the hallway.  He was such a font of knowledge and his telling of history was so engaging and entertaining.  It was really something that I looked forward to and have missed ever since his retirement.


It is with great sadness that we, the Social Studies Department at Quincy High say good bye to George.  He was a fixture on QHS's 2nd Floor for decadeshis booming voice heard all the way down the hall.  His generosity with his knowledge of local and national history was a resource for both his colleagues and students.  If you didn't have the privilege of having him in class, he could always be relied upon for tours of the Adams birthplaces and the Mansion at Peacefield in his other job for the National Parks Service.  We at QHS are so grateful to have had the opportunity to have such a dedicated historian on our staff.

Dear Smith Family,
    I was so saddened to hear of George's passing and my prayers are with you. 

  It is not an exaggeration to say that I looked forward to every conversation with George while we were colleagues at Quincy High School. His wisdom, guidance and humor  enabled me to survive and then thrive as I began my teaching career. He could take any historical or economic concept and create an entertaining and informative lesson that engaged all students. I continue to use many lessons and ideas he gave me.  My memories of George, a great teacher and mentor, will stay with me forever.

George Smith changed my life. He was a friend, a colleague and a mentor during my teaching years at Quincy High (1995-2002). George was the only park ranger in Boston who drew crowds, the only teacher I knew who could get a room full of non-English speakers to pass the A.P. exam, and a man who got me to embrace teaching with a passion that keeps me in it to this day. I love George Smith and I always will. Thank you for our trips to NYC. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for the spirit you brought to this world. I will never forget you.

My sincerest heartfelt condolences to the family of George Smith. I had the utmost pleasure of working alongside him at Boston N.H.P. He taught me a great deal and knew the history of Boston more than anyone I knew. He will be very much missed.

To the Smith Family:

I'm deeply sorry for your loss, and very saddened to learn of George's passing. 

I spent three years teaching in a classroom right next to George. At the end of every class, I'd rush to the door and wait for him to come out so that we could talk for a few minutes in between periods. It was always one of the highlights of my day; he knew exactly how to put me at ease if I was stressed out with a joke or funny observation.

Once, I had to teach a class about why the Great Depression happened, which is knew almost nothing about. I confessed my worry to George; he pulled me into his classroom after 2:30, sat me down, and gave me this incredible hourlong tutorial on the causes of the depression. There was a lot of arm-waving involved. I learned more in an hour with him than I did in four years of college. It was amazing, and I never forgot it.

Once, I visited him at the Adams Mansion, and he gave me a private tour of the house, showing me all the nooks and crannies that people didn't get to see on the regular tour. It's still one of my favorite memories of my years in Quincy.

George was an excellent teacher, a thoughtful colleague, and an wonderful person. He's the type of teacher that anyone should hope to be like. 

I'm very, very sorry for your loss.

Dear Meryl, I am so sorry to learn from John Manson about George. I was very fortunate to have worked with George for many years at Boston NHP. He taught me a lot about Boston history.  I enjoyed his historical tidbits. He was our most popular ranger each summer for public as well as for our teacher workshops.

What can I say about a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother in law. There is so much I can not put it all into words.   George was the kind of guy that if you asked him about something, he would tell you when it was made, who made it, and how it was made.  He was always willing to share his knowledge. Rich and I will always remember the time we were taking a trip to New York and George set up an itinerary for us that would put any travel agent to shame.  When ever I walked into a room where he was he always greeted me with "Hi Auntie"   I will miss hearing that.  Rich and are grateful for having  him be a part of our family,   He will be missed.  Rest in peace George

Dear Meryl,

Miriam and I were greatly saddened to learn of George's passing. Although not having had much contact with each other in recent years, I recall him now with great fondness as an economics teacher at Quincy High who took a special interest in my son David and was instrumental in securing a special summer internship for him and helping him obtain admission to a very good college. I recall to this day the excitement I heard in his voice when he learned that David received his acceptance letter.

My mother, a refugee from Nazi Germany, always used to use the term a better person in describing people who throughout their lives devote themselves to supporting and advancing the lives and interests of other people, even to the point of placing the concerns of others ahead of their own. George was such a person, a mensch and an all-round good guy.

May his memory be a blessing for all of us.
