
MAURICE P. WHITE, most recently of Providence, Rhode Island, but for most of his life a resident of Brighton, Massachusetts, passed away on January 13, 2012. He was 94 years old. His late wife, Eleanor Mitchell White, passed away in 2005. He was born in Boston, a son of the late Maurice P. White and Isabella (Cooks) White. Mr. White, along with his late brother Theodore (Teddy), owned and operated M.P. White Hardware Co. on Stuart Street until the store was sold in 1983. M.P. White was founded in 1900 by Mr. White’s father and was originally located on Washington Street. Upon his retirement, Mr. White was a dedicated volunteer. He contributed his time with the SCORE and School Volunteers For Boston programs. He taught English as a second language and math and computer skills to elementary students, and coached an award-winning team of 5th Grade LOGO programmers. In 1988, the United Way of Massachusetts honored him for his service, naming him Volunteer of the Year. A veteran of World War II, Mr. White served as a medic in the Army, attaining the rank of corporal. He served in Europe, and fought in the Battle of The Bulge, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his brother Theodore White, and his sister Charlotte White Rubenstein. He was survived by his sister Estelle White Siegal of Providence, who died on January 18, 2012. He is survived by various nieces and nephews.
