Esther M. Howard, 97, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died peacefully Nov. 16, 2023, at Bethany Care Center in Canton, OH. Born in Kalamazoo, MI, she was the youngest of Newell and Fannie Pond’s family of “puddles”, which also included her sisters Janette and Barbara. Esther married Robert Howard in 1947, and his newspaper career led to countless moves across MI, IL, and ultimately North Canton, OH. Wherever she went, she bloomed where she was planted. The couple welcomed three children -- Thomas, David and Anita -- who helped expand the family with 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Esther and Robert loved adventure -- traveling the world, relaxing at their lake home on Lake Mohawk in Malvern, OH, and making annual treks to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a spot they both treasured. Throughout their marriage, she willingly shared her time and talents with others, as an accomplished seamstress, piano player, church organist, and Boy Scout leader. Her retirement years were filled with golfing, gardening, and volunteering for organizations like Meals on Wheels – which she did well into her 80s. However, her favorite pastime was being surrounded by family, delighting in all the activity. Known for her gracious and kind spirit, she extended her affection to ‘Tramp’ and countless other family pets, who regularly sought out her warm lap and gentle touch. Following Robert’s death, Esther eventually moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Jeff. Thanks to their constant care, she resided in their home until her short stay at Bethany Care Center. She is survived by her children, Tom (Lisa), David (Katie), and Anita (Jeff), plus her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pre-deceased by her parents, sisters, and husband, Esther will be interred at a later date in the family plot in Kalamazoo’s Riverside Cemetery.
