Pauline Franks, a lifetime resident of Green Township/City of Green, died Monday morning, January 30, 2017. She was the only child of Russell and Helen (Workinger) Franks, both lifetime residents of Green Township. Her grandfather, Emanuel Franks, was also a lifetime member of Green Township.
Pauline graduated from Greensburg High School in 1935, received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Kent State University in 1939 and a Bachelor of Science in Library Science from Western Reserve University in 1940.
She first worked in the Bedford High School Library, then at the Akron Public Library. There she had the exciting experience of working on the Bookmobile when that service was first started in Summit County. In April 1950, she joined the staff of Bierce Library at the University of Akron where she worked until retirement in December, 1983. She held a number of positions there, starting as Reference Librarian, the Head of Public Services, Associate University Librarian, and her final three years as University Librarian. During her time at the University she saw many changes come to libraries in the way they served their users.
After retirement, she served her community by serving on the Merger Study Commission, two Long Range Planning Commissions, and the Records Commission. She was also active in working with the Green High School Alumni Group for 25 years.
At her request there will be no visiting hours or service. She will be entombed in the Mausoleum of the East Akron Cemetery next to her parents. Arrangements under the direction of Karlo-Libby Funeral Home.
