On July 3, 2021, Mafes Deweet Guinn, age 90, passed away peacefully in Denton, Texas. Mafes was born on September 24, 1930, in Grand Saline, Texas, to John Walton Guinn and Modenner Woolverton Guinn. He grew up in Van Zandt County and graduated from Wills Point High School.
At the age of 21, Mafes was called to active duty by the U.S. Army on February 28, 1952. After serving overseas during the Korean War, he was released from active duty on December 4, 1953, as a corporal. He transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves to complete eight years of service before being honorably discharged in 1960. Mafes then moved to Dallas, Texas, to begin his lifelong career as a roofer. After diligently working to learn the roofing trade and earning a reputation as an excellent, dependable roofer, Mafes formed Mafes Guinn Roofing, where he worked until retirement.
Mafes chose Mesquite, Texas, to raise his three children, whom he cherished and loved dearly. They, along with his six grandchildren, were his pride and joy. In addition to being a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mafes was a loving brother, uncle, and friend. He often went out of his way to lend a helping hand or care for others. His soft-spoken, kind, and caring demeanor will be missed by all that knew him. Mafes loved the Lord and served as a Baptist deacon during his young adult years. In his spare time, Mafes enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
Mafes is survived by his daughter, Rhonda DeVaney; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Mark Anderson; son, Christopher Guinn; grandchildren, Brandon and Broocke Anderson, Michael and Margaret DeVaney, Ryan Anderson, Kyle DeVaney, Matthew Anderson, Patrick DeVaney; great-granddaughter, Tatum Anderson; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Tommie Guinn; and many nieces and nephews.
Mafes was preceded in death by his parents, John and Modenner Guinn; son-in-law, Dennis DeVaney; three brothers; five sisters; four half-brothers; and six half-sisters.
