

A funeral service for Malvin Fowler, 89, of Canton, Texas will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Canton under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Pastor Mike Roberson officiating.
Malvin went to be with the Lord on January 15, 2021, at home surrounded by family. He was born on September 21, 1931, in Van, Texas, to Malvin Fowler Sr. and Viola Miller Fowler. He grew up in Van, Texas, and graduated from Van High School in 1949. Malvin went on to play football at TCU for four years earning his Bachelor’s Degree in education.
Mal was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Canton, and he taught Sunday school for many years. Mal was a coach for over 40 years - three years at Schreiner University, three years at TCU, coach at Van High School from 1956 to 1961 and then from 1965 to 1987. In 1979 the Van High School team won the State Champion Title under his direction. Mal went on to become the Canton High School Athletic Director and head football coach from 1988 until his retirement in 1993. In 2013, Mal Fowler Field was named in his honor at Van Memorial Stadium. Mal received the Stalling Award from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2010. He was inducted into the Van ISD Faculty/Staff Hall of Fame in 2017. Mal has been inducted in the East Texas Coaches Association Hall of Honor as Coach of the Year. Mal was a member of the Lion’s Club and numerous committees. He was a founding member of the Van Education Foundation. Mal spent his free time raising cattle, and his favorite pastime was attending ALL the sporting events involving his grandchildren. Mal loved the Lord and his family. He leaves an empty space in the hearts of all that knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Malvin and Viola Fowler; his first wife, Shirley Holland Fowler; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Jackie Fowler; grandson, Hugh Ghormley IV; sisters, Eldeane, Mary and Jonell.
Mal is survived by wife, Emma LaDell Fowler; brother, Johnny and wife, Dyanne, sister, Bettye, son, Todd Fowler; daughter Kim Burch and husband, Stacy; daughter, Teresa Short and husband, Mark; daughter, LaDell Pierce; grandchildren, Jennifer Hudgens and husband, Jeff, Cade Fowler, Holly Raitz, Casey Raitz and wife, Celeste, Brayden Burch, Braylee Burch, Avery King and husband, Dalton, Layton Martinez, Ashlyn Short, Makayla Short, Jonathan Pierce and wife, Nikki, Blair Hesskew and husband, Destry; 15 great-grandchildren; and family friend and caregiver, Vickie Holloway.
Family will receive visitors from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at Eubank Funeral Home.
