Charles "Chaz" Rothwell, aged 78, passed away on March 18, 2026, in Matlacha Isles, Florida. Born to Harry Thomas Rothwell and Beatrice Margaret Yescavage, Charles and his older half-brother, Thomas, spent their childhood on the cobblestone streets of Braddock, Pennsylvania—causing mischief with close friends and living life to the fullest. In his early years, Charles worked in a Pittsburgh steel mill, hunted deer, fished often, and developed a lifelong love for camping.
While in Pittsburgh, he met his wife, Sharon Stephenson. It was Sharon who encouraged him to pursue a career in medicine, and following their marriage in 1970, the newlyweds moved to Southwest Florida in the mid-70s to begin their new chapter.
Charles and Sharon dedicated the majority of their professional lives to the newly built Cape Coral Hospital. Charles rose to become the Director of Respiratory Therapy and later served as a Hospital Administrator, while Sharon held leadership roles within nursing. A natural educator, Charles also taught future respiratory therapists at FSW (formerly Edison State College) and Nova University. He was a compassionate leader who fostered a strong, tight-knit team through a mix of practical jokes, fierce hospital competitions, and a shared dedication to caring for the Southwest Florida community.
He deeply valued the outdoors, spending nearly every summer of his children’s formative years traveling to National Parks, camping, and exploring new sights. Those who knew Charles would describe him as sweet, warm, and exceptionally quick-witted. While the jury is still out on his theory that squid dipped in ranch made for the best grouper bait, Charles remained forever convinced. His porch in Matlacha was a magnet for the neighborhood’s greatest minds, where the happiest hours were spent laughing, sharing stories, and soaking in the serenity of the water.
Charles was preceded in death in 2022 by his wife of 52 years, Sharon. He is survived by his eldest son, Charles Wesley; his middle son, Christopher; his daughter, Ashley Bott; and his five grandchildren: Alexia, Atreyu, London, Zoe, and Ava.
A memorial service (TBD) will be held for close friends and family in the coming weeks. Please message the family if you would like to attend.
