Charlie I knew well for only two or three years, but over that period he was such an important friend that I have always regretted that we eventually lost contact - and struggle now to believe this sad news. The time we met was a crucial one in anybody's life - the last few years at school - and his company was always engaging, entertaining and only rarely annoying in the way of teenagers. The real loss is of course his family's, I didn't know them but my heart goes out to them; but I feel it too, as one who was so glad to have been his friend and as one who remembers him now - and the great times we shared - with fondness, affection and a smile. He was one of the best.

Charlie, to me, was never just Charlie, he was always Uncle Charlie. Never abbreviated and always said with warm feelings. He will always be remembered for bringing a smile, laugh and plenty of good humour to every family event that I can remember, never failing to open our greeting with "alright m'dear?". If ever someone utters the wrods I will always think of Uncle Charlie. Always proud of his girls and never shy of showing it, he is missed and won't ever be forgotten. 

And so Uncle Charlie, I do hope you are looking down on us and giving us a smile. You're alright m'dear :)

Charlie.........We all have our own special memories of Charlie. Mine is the 'first morning' visits. We were always all laughing before the black coffee was even poured!! Charlie made us so welcome and had us all in hysterics with his anecdotes of fellow visitors. Although he was laid back and relaxed nothing was ever too much trouble. Our first 'Osprey' visit was in 1993. We very quickly came to consider Charlie, Peta, Olivia and Zoe friends and looked forward to visiting as often as we could. Although there have been many changes in all our lives in the years since then our passion for Cape Coral has remained constant. That is largely due to Charlie and his family. 

To Olivia and Zoe, you will always have the memories of a father who loved you more than anything and wanted to give you the world. I recall an email I received from Charlie when your mum was visiting family in the UK. He spoke of you both with such love and pride and said how much he enjoyed having that special time with you.

I can honestly say that my life is  richer for having known Charlie.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the sad news of Charlie's passing, we first met in 1998 and hit it off instantly, Charlie was a warm, funny and kind person, always smiling, the help and advise he gave to us when we built our home was invaluable, our trips to Cape Coral will never be the same again. I met Charlie when he visited his friend Tim Kyndt who i was at university with. Tim and i were friends and we both had mates visiting us from home over the same weekend. It turned out that Tims friends were much like mine so we all went to the pub, drank too much beer and got along like a house on fire. Charlie and i hit it off from the start and i was struck at once by his great sense of humour and his happy outlook on life.
After leaving university i moved to London and Charlie and Tim were the first people i contacted. They were flatmates and we soon had a big bunch of friends that would hang out together for parties, weekends away and some very memorable skiing holidays. But my friendship with Charlie was really cemented by a holiday that the two of us took to Greece. We travelled around the greek Islands listening to Echo and the Bunnymen and the Jesus and Mary Chain - Charlies favourites at the time and we played endless backgammon and partied long into every night. We laughed endlessly - he was the most excellent company.
Some time later he would meet Peta and to my delight they moved right around the corner from me in Wandsworth and it was great to have my mate close by for a beer and a laugh.
We had many more great trips away with him and Peta and me with my girlfriend. a new year trip to amsterdam was particularly hilarious.
As i got to know Charlie better i came to realise that he was truly one of life nice guys, he never had a bad word to say about anybody, he always had a big smile on his face and he always made me laugh. We would spent hours laughing at nothing in particular.
I remember Charlie working really hard to make a success of his early career in spite of a bad recession and some difficult times, but he was ever the optimists. Eventually he saw his opportunity to make a new life in Florida and i was sad to see him move overseas, but i knew he would make a success of things and so it proved.I visited Charlie and Peta at the first opportunity and it was great to see him making a new life, new friend and of course a whole new lovely family.

For Charlie to be taken away so early in life had been a devastating blow and it is very difficult to come to terms with. My deepest sympathy goes to Peta, Olivia and Zoe and the rest of his family. Charlie often spoke very warmly about his family and i know that he loved his two daughters above everything. I hope that you can take some comfort and strength from the huge amount of love that there was for Charlie. I know that you were proud of him and i was certainly proud to call him my friend.

First I would like to share a message from a mutual friend Paul Hadgraft (or Haddy!) from England who could not be here today. 

I will be forever grateful to have known Charlie he was not just my Boss but a great friend for many years. All the memories of the times we shared will be cherished and remembered forever. Charlie will forever live in my heart. A truly great guy!

For those of you that don't know me, I am Nick Adams I have had the honor of being one of Charlie's friends for the last 12 years
I moved over to the US from England with my wife Lori and our 6 month old son Max  in June of 1999 I met Charlie later that year,
The fact that we met "at all" was pretty amazing. I was in the process of setting up my photography business after moving to the US. 
I had a small amount of money in my pocket which was rapidly depleting and was needing some extra cash. 
So I was (with a hint of desperation) one of those guys that responded to a job that was advertised in the local newspaper with an un-realistic earnings claim and no job description. All I read was earn $100 thousand a year, Perfect I thought! I applied for the job and got it. The job turned out to be New Car Sales. Unsurprisingly my vast earning potential I was never realized and I discovered that selling Mitsubishis and Hyundai's on Fowler Street was not for me. but during my brief sales career I was introduced to a fellow Brit by the name of Jamie. I got on well with Jamie and after a month or so of knowing him I received an invite for a weekend sailing trip in which I was told 6 guys (4 of which were brits) would charter a 30' Catermeran from Gulf Harbour Marina,  and head off to Tween Waters Inn, Captiva taking part in a sale boat race on the way. The race coincided with the annual Halloween party at the Tween Waters Inn, so that would be our evenings entertainment. in a desperate bid to find new friends and meet  people I welcomed the opportunity with open arms. 
Well it didn't all go to plan, the guy that invited me had to cancel but he reassured me that I would still be welcome to go. So I did.  Myself and 4 other complete strangers were stuck in a 12'x12' wheel house for the next few days . The four other guys were real characters each in there own right but one stood out to me and we instantly hit it off.
That was the first time I met Charles Sloan.

   The six or so boats taking part in the race met under the Sanibel Causeway bridge where we were to make a heading to the Sanibel Lighthouse and then turn to starboard and follow the Sanibel coastline North, to Captiva. For those of you who are not familiar with boating or the local area, this would take you approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace on a power boat. Well, it all went horribly wrong at the starting point. One of our very persistent and slightly inebriated crew members insisted on mimicking an official start to a sail boat race by launching the sail boats tender with himself aboard, and a loud air horn tucked firmly in his pocket.  Even though we explained to him that this would put us behind because we would then have to retrieve him and the row boat after everyone started, he was undeterred and the plan was carried out. The moment the horn was blasted was the last time we were along side the other sailboats. In fact, within half an hour we could not even see any of the other boats. To cut a long story short that 10 mile boat race took us a solid 12 hours. We came in six hours after the next to last boat! 

Why do I tell you this???? Well because those twelve hours were probably some of the funniest times I spent with Charlie. We laughed constantly listening to stories about our Captains dubious sailing past and another young guys exaggerated deviant conquests. Funniest of all was the fact that we were tacking into the wind and we would go for an hour and look at the beach that we should have been passing by and still see the same person in the exact same spot that we had seen an hour before. This was with the engine running!  We survived the weekend and this marked the start of an incredible friendship that I will cherish for the rest of my life. In some ways that sailing trip was an omen of things to come, life did not always sail with the wind behind us during the following twelve years but we did tackle it with humor, enthusiasm and a zest for life.

   I learnt an incredible amount from Charlie and we had a lot in common:- we shared the same infectious enthusiasm for business, We never grew tired of our love for music, how ever obscure. We had incredible respect for each other. We shared stories of growing up in England, we shared stories of each others family members that we had never met and how they impacted our lives.  We even enjoyed a mid-life crises together which resulted in us taking the Harley Davidson Motorcylcle course to get our Motorcycle licences. We spent hours and hours talking about motorcycles, from the badly running impractical Motor Marini he had in London, to the Ducati that Charlie recently owned and loved to ride. He gave me the pleasure of meeting his family, Peta, Livy and Zoe as well as Jim and Pat . We shared a sincere love of boating and being on the water. The last couple of years had been testing for Charlie with some health issues and a recession to deal with but I firmly believe, Charlie, has moved on to a better place, where he will find peace and although his body and soul have been whisked away from us, a special pocket in my heart has been left filled to the brim with memories and love for a dear friend. They will remain with me forever, I am sure in the future I will reach within this special pocket to draw from experiences we have had together and Charlie will live on, not as we knew him but embodied as part of my makeup and passed on from one person to the next. So Charlie you will never be gone completely, you will always be close by.

We will all miss Charlie. He light up the room when he entered with his cheeky smile and sense of fun. Each time we met we felt a rise in expectation of what we would get up to and the fun we would have. There are so many great stories about Charlie and many have been told here. We will always have a smile on our faces when we think of Charlie and the adventures we had, skiing, curling and catching Pelicans to name just a few. He thought the world of his girls and I know they, and we, thought the world of him. Our thoughts are with you Charlie, and we will always be there for Peta, Livvy & Zoe.

Charlie and I met when we were 15 on a London Underground train on our way back from school.  We just happened to be sitting opposite each other, started chatting and within minutes we were laughing and teasing each other about our respective musical tastes.  By the end of the journey we agreed to catch the train to school together the next morning and from that day onwards I had the great fortune to have Charlie as a best friend for many years.  I remember many an evening spent at his family home, ‘The Longhouse’ in Fyfield, listening to some great music and enjoying Charlie’s endless enthusiasm, humour and warm friendship.  You couldn’t help but laugh in Charlie’s company. He was not only very funny, but his smile and laugh were infectious.  I’m sure you have all seen it yourselves: starting with that cheeky grin, then the glint in his eyes and then the head tilting back as he went into that classic Charlie giggle-come-gurgle-type laugh.  I told him that he laughed like a sink-disposal unit.  We creased up in a fit of giggles and we both probably knew then that not only would we would be good mates, but we also be good for each other as well.  When we didn’t travel to and from school together, we would leave notes on each others pedal-bike parked at the train station offering guidance on a range of subjects from dubious chat-up lines to try with possible girlfriends through to what a decent pedal-bike should look like.  He maintained that it should look as cool as his of course!  However, that friendly competition was soon superseded by our competition in learning to drive.  I was fortunate enough to pass my test first which, according to Charlie, meant that I should sit in the passenger seat of his aging blue van whilst he got some driving practice.  And so we drove back and forth to school, with Hawkwind blasting out on the old cassette player, Charlie with ciggie in hand chuckling away, veering from one side of the road to the other.

A few years later, when we were in our early twenties, we shared a flat in London for a couple of years and then a house that Charlie’s dad Jim, kindly let us live in rent-free for a while.  Charlie was a great housemate as you can probably imagine.  But what surprised me at that time were his budding culinary skills.  Thanks to his mother Sue, Charlie was the proud owner of an electric slow-cooker in which Charlie would place some beef, vegetables and beef stock before he left for work and then return home at the end of a hard day’s grind to a delicious casserole.  Charlie was amazed at the simplicity, yet sophistication and ease of being able to produce something really tasty with minimal effort from such a wonder of modern technology as it was then!  In fact, I swear that Charlie loved that slow-cooker almost as much as a series of motorbikes that he had at the time.  After all, the motorbikes did keep breaking down and whilst Charlie may have become a great handy-man in his later years, he was no mechanic in those days.  In fact, he sold me one of those bikes – an old Yamaha 250.  Two weeks later he sheepishly came up to me and handed me a vital spring from the carburettor that he had removed during one of his mechanical disasters and had forgotten to replace.  “Don’t worry mate” he said with that glint in his eye and a big grin breaking out over his face “I’ll give you a couple of quid refund and I won’t charge you for the spring!”.  Charlie accompanied this line with the gentle punch on my shoulder that became his standard and effective way of disarming me every time I got a bit wound up. 

I have very fond memories of Charlie in the flat in South Woodford, such as Charlie playing “The Killing Moon” by Echo & The Bunnymen on full volume with all the lights turned low to create a laid-back atmosphere.  Charlie was a relaxed guy after all.  He was very chilled even when the downstairs neighbours complained that the plaster was falling of their ceiling during one of the great parties we had!

Anyway, we did gradually start to mature and Charlie was soon to meet Peta.  As far as I could see, until that time in his life, Peta was the best thing that ever happened to Charlie.  He was head-over-heels in love and his grin grew even broader, if that was possible.  Together with friends we all had some great times together, including some mad weekends away in the English and Welsh countryside.  Peta and Charlie grew closer and closer and I absolutely believe that Charlie became a better person for knowing Peta. 

I am fortunate to have wonderful memories of a man whose love of life, whose warm charisma and whose generosity of spirit made my early years sparkle with adventure and many laughs.  I could not have wanted for a better best friend than Charlie and I am very privileged to say that there was a time in Charlie’s life when he said that I was his best friend.  My heart goes out to all of you that have known and loved Charlie in his later years.  My love and deepest sympathy goes to Olivia, Zoe and Peta.  On those many teenage nights when Charlie and I drank beer in The Queen’s Head in Fyfield and talked eagerly about our futures, Charlie talked about one day having a wonderful family of his own and I absolutely believe that this came true for him.

We were shocked and saddened when we heard the news. We have many fond memories of Charlie always laughing and joking. We will always remember the skiing holiday in Grindelwald with the silly card games and attempts at curling as usual Charlie had us in fits of laughter. Then there were our trips to see you in Florida more laughter and clowning around and Charlie chugging along in his boat grinning from ear to ear. We will miss you Charlie sleep well.

My wife Jean and I will always remember Charlie's wonderful laughter and conversation. He welcomed us into his life as if we'd known him forever and it made every visit special for us. Charlie found us our dream in Cape Coral and we will never forget it. For us Charlie is Cape Coral and may his light shine across the Caloosahatchee River for us all to see. He will always be in our hearts as will all the great friends he gave us to share.

We will miss you sooooo much. Your laughter and your wit - your ability to make everything fun and funny, whatever it was. A beautiful, brilliant and lovely light now shines brightly in another world. Our bestest times were the very best, sharing a humour that warmed the spirit. Guinness trees in window boxes, fitness trails with Jack D, tricky low garden walls in Westerham, building sheds, bacon butties in Thurleigh Road, dancing with Margaret, Tamashas, bookings with slippers on, skittles waiting, boats aground, paradise in the Grenadines, fireworks in Amsterdam, convertibles and Rush, life, love and babies! Over the past 7 years I spent every day with Charlie. He was a wonderful person who taught me so much. I will never forget all the great times we had together. He had a way of seeing the good in every situation. His sense of humor made everyday at work a pleasure. He made an amazing impact on every person he met. Charlie took such good care of me and my family and I will never forget that. He was such a generous,caring man. Charlie will always be in our hearts and on our minds. Not a day goes by that we dont stop and think of a great "Charlie Story"... We cherish every one of them.

Dear Peta, Olivia and Zoe,
We are all so sad about Charlie's unexpected death. The last time we saw you all was in 2000 when we were in Orlando for a holiday and visited you for a great day out on the boat and for lunch. 
I have contacted friends and former work colleagues and we all have fantastic memories of working, socialising and generally having fun back in the 80's when we all worked together in Barking. A great era.
Charlie was one of the nicest guys I have ever met and I feel a real loss.
He will be looking down on you and looking after you from a better place.

I had only just made contact again with Charlie after too many years. I had been looking forward to talking with him and catching up on all that had happened over the intervening years. I was devastated to hear from Peta that he had gone. He was one of the most honest, down to earth and funniest people I ever knew.

I just found out yesterday from John about Charlie and I cannot tell you how sad I was to hear of his sudden and tragic death.  Charlie was such a cheerful man -- always smiling.  He will be missed by so many people.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls during this very, very difficult time and I know that his wonderful memories will stay with all of us. Jane and Tim were staying at my house over the weekend. We all felt so sad about Charlies sudden death. Much of our conversation was spent of the many happy times we had together when you both llived in England. Today will be a really difficult day and we are all sorry we cant be there with you. Our thoughts and our prayers are with you.
