Penny was the daughter of James and Bertha McCallie and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. In her early teens, a childhood friend introduced Penny to a personal relationship with the Lord. As a result, she was able to overcome a difficult upbringing and found the strength to break the cycle of dysfunction as she raised her own family. She attended Kentucky Christian College, where she met Charles Elmer Faust, and the two were married on graduation day, May 18, 1951. They added four daughters to their family: Cyndi, Cathy, Candy, and Carol. Charles and Penny spent more than forty years in Christian ministry in the New York metropolitan area, where they served with the “Go Ye” Chapel Mission to establish Christian churches throughout the northeastern United States.
Penny devoted her adult life to caring for her family and supporting her husband’s ministry. She was a tireless servant in every way, opening her home and heart to hundreds of people. A creative cook, she could feed a crowd from what she had on hand and on a meager budget. A gracious hostess, she made everyone feel cared for, loved, and encouraged. A self-taught pianist, she blessed others with music and song both at home and in church. A capable teacher, she led Bible studies, spoke for women’s groups, and counseled many through difficult times. Penny and Charles worked side by side in ministry and were better together! Their daughters were always included in their pursuits—singing together and learning much about service and ministry from their parents. Penny gave her family and friends countless reasons to experience joy and laughter in her presence. She was quick to laugh at herself, and many happy memories involve her good natured mishaps and adventures! There was always plenty of noise and laughter around the table when eating, in the car when traveling, and around the piano when practicing for an upcoming event. Her attitude and smile were a true gift to all who knew her. Thirteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren brought endless pleasure to
Penny. She and Charles were proud of the diversity and talent within their growing family. She made numerous quilts for her extended family and kept everyone stocked with homemade jams! She was “Grandma” to several people not related by blood but surely connected by love. Her warm hugs were always readily available. Penny’s last year and a half were spent in a loving memory care facility as dementia impaired her ability to care for herself. Yet she maintained her sweet, godly disposition and beautiful smile, which touched everyone who cared for her. She continued to play the piano for singalongs with the residents—her gift of music ever present in her mind and heart.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha McCallie, her brother, James McCallie, and her beloved husband, Charles. She lovingly remembered by her daughters Cyndi Faust, Cathy Williams, Candy Faust, and Carol Goodlet; her thirteen grandchildren - Robb, Rich, Kelly, Jonathan, Jael, Jana, Matthew, Michelle, Melinda, Tom Jr., Christy, Amy, and Becky - as well as all her great-grands!
She and Charles have left behind a tremendous legacy of faith and family. “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” - Proverbs 31:28-31
