Tom (Papa Tom) to some, was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and was raised in Fort Pierce, Florida. In his 20’s and 30’s he lived in Western Massachusetts. In his 40’s he moved permanently to the Fort Myers area where he was delighted by the lack of snow and good fishing.
He is survived by five siblings: Wm. Michael and Lona Leis of North Carolina, Steve and Debbie Leis of Florida, Kathy and Fran Guay, Toni James, and Terry and Karen Leis – all of Western Massachusetts. Sons: Rob and Amber Leis and Rob’s mom Sue – all of Florida, and Ryan and Valerie Lee of Ohio. Stepdaughters Tammy Churchill of Massachusetts, and Susan Churchill of Colorado. In addition, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Polly and Joseph Leis of Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts.
Tom’s mother (Polly) hosted a family week in August at their cottage on Cape Cod every year beginning in 1982. For thirty-five years it was a special time for all that could make it. Afterwards, the weekly reunions continued in Florida with Tom’s siblings and anyone else who could attend. March will forever be a bittersweet yet favorite memory of our last reunion with Tom. Most evenings were spent playing poker and enjoying Tom’s great sense of humor. A very special highlight this year was a first time offshore solo charter boat for all the brothers. Several sailfish were caught (and released). Delicious snapper was caught and enjoyed by them and the other relatives eagerly awaiting the day’s catch.
Tom never retired; he was a master carpet installer and estimator who was working fulltime when he passed. His family would like to especially express their gratitude to his employer Abbey Carpet. Both the staff and employees were exceptional to work with and Tom enjoyed going to work every day.
Tom will be missed by his many friends: Earliene – a friend for life, Brian – whom he shared a love of fishing with, James – who he had mentored over twenty years prior, which led to a lasting friendship, AJ as well (hang in there AJ...be strong…stay on the positive path you are on!), Dee, Jessika, Uncle Ron and Nana – Tom enjoyed playing cards and LRC at Nana’s place, as well as going to bingo with them. Many thanks to Krissy and all the awesome folks at Mid-Point Bingo in Cape Coral, FL. And lastly, thanks to Geo and all the caring, compassionate staff at Coral Ridge Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to a local food bank.
Tom was a charismatic character; his unique sense of humor made a lot of people smile. He was always willing to help folks out either with manual labor or providing a place to stay for anyone that needed it. Although we are saddened by Tom’s unexpected passing, we know if he could speak to us now, he would say not to cry; instead laugh, rejoice, and embrace every day as the gift they are.
