Mary was born at Mrs. Coleman's nursing home in Manor, Saskatchewan and attended Salem School which was 1/2 mile south of the farm she grew up on. She did not complete Grade 10 due to the passing of her mother. She then helped to raise her younger brotheres, not only doing the cooking, gardening and housework but also helped in the field and with the cows. Then only at 23 years old, she lost her father so Mary and her brothers had some very tough years ahead of them.
In 1953 they lost their house to a fire, they lost everything including the piano. At this time Mary purchased her first accordion and learned to play by ear. Over the years her accordion and piano became her passion. She played in the local "Pig and Whistle Show", played for birthday parties, family events and at nursing homes with the "Sharps and Flats".
In November, 1965, Mary married John Van Sprundel and to this union were born four children, Teresa, Grace, Richard and Darcy. She and John resided and raised their family on the family farm. Mary always had huge gardens, fruit trees, raised chickens and sold eggs. She was the best cook for miles and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.
Mary was a life-long member of St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Manor, which she served devotedly as a warden and member of the Guild, Vestry and Parish Council. She was commissioned as a lay leader and led services until her vision failed. Her dedication and faith was an inspiration to all.
In 1992, whe was blessed with her first grandchild, Jordan and then blessed with five more: Dakota, Korbin, Shelby, Cooper and Kelsey. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, whether it be baking, making music together, reading or just following their daily activities, she was ALWAYS there!
Over the years, for the most part, she was in good health, although she lost her vision. It never slowed her down. She learned to cope with her vision loss and as family we did as much as we could to help her.
Mary is survived by her husband, John.
