John Westermeier, 65, passed away at his home December 10 following a brief illness. John was born November 16, 1953 to Robert and Betty Westermeier in Columbus, Indiana. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1971 and began a career in golf course management soon after. After several years as golf course superintendent at Harrison Lake Country Club in Columbus, he became golf course superintendent at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana in 1985 where he remained until his death.
John became a certified golf course superintendent in 1988. His love for the outdoors was not only reflected in his work, but as a certified naturalist as well as a master gardener. He was involved in the Marion County Master Gardener program and spent many volunteer hours as a garden guide on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Because he believed trees were an important part of urban landscaping, he had served on the Carmel Urban Forestry Committee since 2013.
John is survived by his wife, Jane, sons Scott Westermeier (Michelle), Jimmy Westermeier, and Patrick Westermeier. Brothers Mark Westermeier (Sue), Mike Westermeier (Karyn), sister Ann Craft, grandson Koen Westermeier, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother David Westermeier (Maria).
