Margaret Elizabeth Settle was born February 7, 1935 in Muncie, Indiana. The family soon moved to a small farm in Carmel. That farm is now the Lexington Farms neighborhood. The old house she grew up in is the clubhouse. She married her high school sweetheart after she finished her degree in Arts and Music at Stephen’s College in St. Louis.
Margaret was dedicated to her family. She had three children; David, Tim and Beth. She was a stay-at-home mom who only worked about 100 hours a week with no days off. She cooked three meals a day when eating out was an infrequent treat. She kept a beautiful home. She played the piano and had a beautiful singing voice. She was a prolific painter and gardener. She drove her three children to all of their sporting events and school activities, often two or more in a day. She loved playing euchre with David, Tim and Beth sitting at the end of her and Jim’s bed. She typed school papers, made costumes, altered clothes, bandaged injuries and sometimes slept. She wanted all of her children’s friends to hang at her house. This included Bill Mitchell who lived with the family during his and David’s senior year. She packed a lot of love into that 100 hours a week.
Soon after the kids were out of the house, Margaret had more time for herself. She loved playing golf at Crooked Stick and won the women’s club championship one year. She continued her love of golf when she and Jim purchased a winter home in Scottsdale. They had great friends there at both Desert Mountain and Desert Forest Golf Club. She also played a lot of bridge and started a weekly bible study.
Margaret was thrilled to have four grandchildren who gave her nine great- grandchildren. She and Jim sold the house in Scottsdale to spend more time with their growing family. Her family was her greatest love.
Jim, the love of her life, passed less than five weeks before she did. They had over 70 years together.
She had a sister, Nancy, who predeceased her; and surviving brother and sister, Scott Settle and Susan Settle Kirkbride. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive her. She passed with peace and gratitude; and will be sorely missed.
