Roger was born on October 17, 1931 in Chicago to Francis and Selma (Nygard) Herreid and was the younger of two children (older brother Carl). He grew up in Blair, Wisconsin where his father ran the family hardware store. After graduating from high school in 1949, he attended Stout Institute for a year before enlisting in the United States Air Force. After discharge he studied electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1959. His entire 29 year professional career was in the employ of Rockwell Collins - first in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and then in Richardson, Texas. He worked on a number of prominent government contracts in the 1960's-70's, including telecommunications systems for the presidential aircraft (Air Force One) and the US space program.
Roger will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his generosity and selflessness, and his fierce love and protection of his family. He was a masterful woodworker and spent a large part of his retirement years making beautiful furniture and carvings for his children and grandchildren.
Roger is survived by his wife, Verna (Stark) Herreid; three sons, Steve (Sheila), Bob (Cheryl) and Pete (Kelli); nine grandchildren, Shannon Michelle Herreid, Amy Elizabeth Herreid, Ashley Laine (Herreid) Swartz, Natalie Marie Herreid, Lara Elizabeth Herreid, Emily Grace Herreid, Buddy Loyd Rich, Jacqueline Paige Benefield and Lauren Nicole Benefield; and two great-grandchildren, Isobelle Nikole Rich and Aiden James Rich.
A memorial service was held on February 17, 2018 at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Coppell.
