Larry Gene Guynes passed away on April 14th, 2023, from a broken heart, less than two weeks after the passing of the love of his life, his wife Jo Ellen Guynes. He was born in San Antonio Texas on September 11th, 1950, to Billy and Margie Guynes, and had a twin brother named Garry. They moved to Dallas where he planted his roots and made many lifelong friends.
He met his beloved Jo Ellen in middle school and fell in love at first sight. Larry graduated high school in 1968. After high school, he was dating Jo Ellen and was trying to woo her heart when he joined the Army for the war in Vietnam. He proposed to her before he left, and she said No… When he returned after his service, he immediately tried to win her heart again. He proposed for a second time, and this time she said YES! They married in 1972 and went on to have 51 beautiful years of marriage. In that time, they had two amazing boys named Brian and Travis. He was a hard-working man and spent 30 years of his career at Nissan.
Larry loved spending time with family, friends and traveling. Having a love for traveling, he took his kids while they were growing up on many road trips all over the country. When they would pass roadside attractions or sites, he was sure to tell everyone to “take a mental picture.” If there was a billboard that advertised a tourist attraction, he would say “If they can afford a billboard, then they are too expensive,” and would keep on driving with the destination in mind.
Larry was a devoted and faithful husband to his wife, a loving father to his sons, the best grandpa that anyone could ask for, and a loyal friend to those who knew him. He was always there for you if you needed him. One of his best qualities was always giving sound advice. He only wanted the best for everyone, and to see them succeed in life. He was always full of wisecracks and was sure to make you laugh every time you were in his presence.
He is preceded in death by his parents Billy and Margie, brother Garry, his wife Jo Ellen, and son Brian. He is survived by his son Travis, daughter-in-law Christina, and grandchildren Dylan, Aliyah, and Maximus, along with his multiple extended family members, Dawn Peterson, Joseph Guynes, Jennifer Allen, Sylvia, Christina, and Collin Mullins. He was deeply loved by his family and friends. His passing has left a tremendous void in our hearts, and we will miss his jokes, warmth, and love.
Funeral services will be held at Rhoton Funeral Home in Carrollton on Sunday April 23rd at 1pm for Larry and Jo Ellen. A reception will immediately follow the service for those to share stories and celebrate their lives. Larry and Jo Ellen will be laid to rest together at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at a private service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Town North Group in Farmers Branch, Texas.
