
Mrs. Carpenter was born May 27, 1917 in Homer, Georgia daughter of the late George M. and Mary Tucker Chambers. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Spurgeon Davis in 1945; her second husband of 26 years, John L. Carpenter in 1997; a sister, Marion Chambers Brown and a niece, Beverly B. Davis.
She is survived by a daughter & son-in-law, Regina Davis & Larry D. Williams; grandchildren, Kay W. & Bruce Covey, Christopher “Kit” & Amy R. Williams; great-grandchildren, Tucker Covey and Davis Williams all of Cartersville, Ga.; a sister, Thelma Chambers of Tyron, NC; a nephew, Aubrey Brown, Jr. of Eastman, Ga.; and special cousins, Anelia C. & Alex Chambers of Commerce, Ga.
After graduating from Banks County High School she earned a teaching certificate from Piedmont College and taught school in Banks and Habersham counties. During the 1950’s and 1960’s she served as the Chief of the local chapter of the Air Force Ground Observer Corpse and was recognized by the Air Force for Meritorious Service including logging over 1,000 hours watching airplanes from the Chenocetah Tower in Cornelia.
She faithfully served as Sunday School teacher, pianist, and on numerous committees as a member of the First Baptist Church in Cornelia, Ga. and the First Baptist Church in Demorest, Ga. During the last years of her life, she was a homebound member of the Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Commerce, Ga.
The family will receive friends at Whitfield Funeral Home – North in Demorest, Ga., from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Yonah Memorial Gardens.
