

Ethel Patterson Black, 87, went home to be with our Heavenly Father and loved ones on Tuesday afternoon, January 22, 2013. She died peacefully and quickly at home following a short illness. A native of Gordon County, she was born May 18, 1925, and had lived in Cartersville all her adult life. She was a member of Etowah Valley Baptist Church and a retiree of Union Carbide/First Brands Corporation.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Rev. L. Dane Black; a son, Michael Dane Black; her parents, Fountain Monroe and Malinda Patterson of Ranger; and 11 brothers and sisters, as well as a granddaughter, Kimberley Denise Black. She is survived by two daughters, Sue Campbell (husband Dan) of White, Georgia; and Pamela Black of Atlanta; a brother- and-sister-in-law Wendell and Johnette Black of Rogers, Arkansas; and sister-in-law Ruby Patterson of Ranger. Ethel also had three surviving grandchildren, Stephanie Dempsey of Rockmart, Melanie Black of Rockmart, and Jonathan Campbell of White. Step-grandchildren include Dannielle Anders, Kenny Coates, Veronica Coates and Richard Coates, in addition to five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She had 17 surviving nieces and nephews spread across the Southeast.
Ethel was a devout Christian and an avid gardener and baker, delighting many friends and relatives with delicious desserts and beautiful peony bouquets. And she came to love cats in her later years.
Owens Funeral Home, at 12 Collins Drive SE in Cartersville, will be in charge of arrangements, with the family receiving visitors on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon; the funeral procession will leave Owens Funeral Home at 1:15 p.m. for a 2 p.m. service at Etowah Valley Baptist Church, located at 1036 Old Alabama Road (off Dallas Highway, turn right just past Phoenix Air Group headquarters). Interment will be at Sunset Memory Gardens alongside her beloved husband, son and granddaughter.
Pallbearers include Wayne Crumley, Don Allred, Johnny Martin, Tod Olson, David Nicholson, and Nick Satterfield.
