

Mr. Grady Wallace Turner, Sr., of Cook Street Cartersville, Georgia was born August 6, 1919 in Polk County, Georgia. He died Saturday, July 28, 2012. He was the son of Grady Andrew Turner and Fannie Popham Turner. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years Ruth McCoy Turner, infant daughter Wanda Vernelle Turner, and brothers, Ralph W. Turner, Houston L. Turner and David Turner. He is survived by his son, Grady Wallace Turner, Jr., daughter in law, Patsy of Atlanta, grandson, Blake Turner and his wife, Kimberly, of Marietta, Georgia and their children, great-grandson Riley and great- granddaughter, Reagan Ruth, and grandson, Drew Turner of Smyrna, Georgia. He is also survived by brothers, Daniel Turner, Sr., and Wayne Turner, Sr. of Cartersville, Georgia and 2 sisters, Virginia Fulton of Kennesaw and Mozelle Towe of Cartersville, Georgia, along with many nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Turner was an active member of Heritage Baptist Church that he helped organize in 1987. He served as an active deacon, helped with Habitat for Humanity and went on mission trips with his wife Ruth to different cities. He also served as President of the Retired Men’s Association where he was a member for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 42, Cartersville, Georgia. Mr. Turner was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army-Air Force. During that time, he was stationed with the Gulf Coast Training Command at Keesler Field, Mississippi, at the B-24 factory school in Ypsilanti, Michigan and later at the 2519 Army Airbase in Fort Worth, Texas. In Texas, his duty was as an aerial engineer training pilots to fly B-24 bomber airplanes. Mr. Turner retired January 1, 1977, from federal service after 35 years. For most of that time he was with the Veterans Canteen Service Field Office in Atlanta, Georgia facilitating personnel placement for the canteens located in 36 VA hospitals throughout the Southeast. He spent his retirement years enjoying travelling and camping with his wife, Ruth, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and involvement with his church and civic activities.
Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the Debt Retirement Fund of the Heritage Baptist Church, 1070 Douthit Ferry Road, Cartersville, Georgia 30120. Visitation will be at Owen Funeral Home on Monday, July 30, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at Heritage Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael Tutterow officiating with interment to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Disciples Sunday School Class, Heritage Baptist Church, Cartersville.
