JJ was born to Julian & Virginia Duran in Albuquerque, NM on April 9, 1952. He was a beloved big brother to his seven younger siblings and enjoyed the adventure of moving with his father’s military career.
Following in his father’s footsteps of service, JJ enrolled in the Air Force Academy in 1970 and graduated in 1974. While stationed in Abilene, TX as a pilot he met his wife, Denise over the radio of the control tower. They were married May 25, 1985, and completed their family with three children. JJ continued to serve in the Air Force for 22 years and retired from active duty in July 1996 while stationed at Charleston AFB. Once retired, JJ and Denise moved their family to Georgia to be close to family. He began the next phase of his career in civil service for the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), of the Department of Defense until he retired in 2018.
JJ was a faithful parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and loved spending time with family. He was also known for his sweet tooth and always had candy to share.
