
Mr. Whitener was born November 24, 1944 in Bartow County, the son of the late, Albert Clifford and Zona Mae (Fields) Whitener, was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War and was of the Christian faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Clarence, Ralph and Earnest Whitener and sisters, Carol Blalock, Ann Gibson and Betty Daniel.
Surviving is his wife, Joan Lewis Whitener of Cartersville, brother and sister in law, Paul Alvin and Annette Whitener of Adairsville, sisters in law and brother in law, Judy and Jerry Chitwood and Shelty Whitener, dear friends and neighbors, Nancy and Dixie Collins, Dallas Worsham, Clyde and Connie Abernathy, friends and precious neighbors, Steve and Terrie Worsham and much loved pet and puppy, “Copper”.
His first Job in life was a carpenter at age 16 for Henry T. Worsham, who came to be known as grandpa He retired from Woodright Industries after 21 years. He loved that job more than any other because he was born to care for his “Kids” there. He was more than their supervisor, he was their friend and they adored hm.
If there was anything he would tell you he would say; “ Be at peace with God and others and yourself”. To his nephews, he would say; “Remember to maintain your cool”.
James was a kind, loving, caring, giving and generous man. His heart had a special place for the elderly and young children. He loved everyone he knew and all who knew him loved him more.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 16, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Donnie Whitener and Rev. Jerry Chitwood officiating.
Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with Military Rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday afternoon and evening from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Justin, Jason and Jonathan Chitwood, Mikey Lewis, Heath Cantrell, Charles Gibson, Mark Gibson, Donnie Whitener, Morris Whitener, Danny Murphy, Larry Whitener and Allen Whitener.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Samaritan’s Purse, St Jude Hospital or The Etowah Humane Society.
