John Peyton Frew

He was born in Akron, Ohio, but moved with his family to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was 11. While he was a student at Decatur Boys High School, John started his part time broadcasting career at an Atlanta area radio station while also working part time at his dad's paint factory in Decatur, Georgia. John soon realized the paint factory wasn't his passion but working in radio was. He worked part time while in school at numerous locations throughout Georgia including Savannah, Valdosta, and Clarksville. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1955 with a degree in Journalism and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and was stationed in Germany. After serving our country he was a full time newsman and Disc Jockey at WQXI in Atlanta, going by the radio name of "George T. McEntyre." In 1966, John and his wife Julia to whom he was married in 1961, built and operated WYXI Radio in Athens, Tennessee. After moving to Athens, Tennessee, John had been in the south long enough to know he liked having grits for breakfast and he found the local restaurant didn't have grits but the next week the restaurant served him grits for his breakfast. The family operated their Tennessee radio station until 1979, when they sold the radio station and moved back to Cartersville, which was Julia's hometown. John along with his wife Julia and daughter Julie purchased WYXC in Cartersville, operating it until 1999 when they sold the radio station and retired.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd William and Elizabeth Hobson Frew; His wife, Julia Neel Frew and his son-in-law, Johnny E. Massey

He is survived by his daughter: Julie Neel Frew-Massey; his granddaughter Juliet Laura Massey and his Maltese dog Ruby all of Cartersville.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at 1pm at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville, GA with Rev. Jack Pennington officiating.
