

Lieutenant Colonel Melvin Eugene King, US Army (ret.), age 85, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, formerly of Cartersville, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014. LTC King graduated from North Georgia College. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and retired from the US Army after 25 years of distinguished service, where he was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. He later retired from the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, where he managed the northwest district office. LTC King was the son of the late Gladys Hayes King and the late Joseph A. King. He was married for 49 years to the late Martha (Libby) Howell King of Cartersville. He is survived by his daughter Melanie King Miller, and her husband Jack Miller; daughter Melinda King Esper, and her husband George Esper; son Mel King, Jr and his wife Kathy King; his grandchildren Grace King, Addison King, Ashley McDonald, Emma Claire King, Danielle Miller and Sean Esper; brother-in-law Robert Howell and his wife Emma Howell; brother-in-law Jim Howell and his wife Martha Jane Howell; sister-in-law Katie H Fields and her husband Erwin (Bud) Fields; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5-7pm Thursday evening at Owen Funeral Home in Cartersville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11am at Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Kevin Lobello officiating. followed by graveside services at Sunset Memory Gardens, with full military rites observed.
