Terry Bassett Forbes

Terry was born March 7, 1938, to Orville Roland and Marjorie (nee Bassett) Forbes in Osceola County, Iowa. Terry grew up in Iowa and moved to Perham, Minnesota in high school.

Terry graduated from Perham High School in 1956. He and a friend went to sign up for the Air Force, but ended up enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During his career in the Marines, he was stationed in various locations in the United States. He signed up for Embassy duty in Iceland, but was ultimately assigned to Ethiopia, where he guarded the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I.

Terry married Judy Tostrud on May 25, 1963, at the Ezekiel Lutheran Church, in River Falls, WI. They were blessed with 2 girls, Kelly and Karen and they ended up raising their family in various cities in Georgia.

Terry continued his military career and retired from the United States Marine Corps as Master Sergeant on September 1, 1986, after 30 years.

Terry enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, hiking, photography, playing cards and bowling. Over the years, Terry and Judy would return back home to the Wisconsin/Minnesota area to visit family and friends.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents Orville and Marjorie; daughter Karen (19 years old, killed by drunk driver in 1987) and Kelly (Fletcher) Warren (55 years old, died from cancer in 2019). He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy. Siblings Zoe Gilbertson; Sharon (Craig) Larson; Mike (Karen) Forbes. Numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Sam Jones Methodist Church 100 W Church St, Cartersville, GA. The interment will be conducted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Terry’s memory.
