Barbara Joan Burks

Barbara was born on August 18, 1953 to Estelle and C.A. May, Jr. in Richmond, VA.

Barbara was raised in Roanoke, VA. She graduated from nursing school at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1974.

After her nursing boards, Barbara went to work for Roanoke Memorial Hospital in the maternity and labor department. Barbara moved to Durham, NC and went to work for Duke University Medical Center in several departments. She also worked for Temp services after retiring with 33 years of employment at Duke.

Barbara is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law: Anne M. King and Geraldine M. Leonard (Tom). Also surviving are beloved nieces and nephews: Andrew King (Wendy Docherty), Jenny Webb (David), Mary Ward (Stephen) and Josiah Leonard. Great nieces and nephews: Luke, Gabe, Alex, Evie and Caroline. Aunt and Uncle: LaFayne and Wyman May of GA, and many other special friends, including Suzanne and Connie, and neighbors, Tim and Terry King.

Barbara also had a dear friend, Claude E. Groves who passed away in April 2011.

A funeral service will be held 5 pm Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held 2 pm Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Harnett Devotional Gardens, 5665 Fairground Road, Dunn, NC.
