Barry Carlisle Newton

Barry Carlisle Newton, 81 years old, died on August 2nd, 2022 at Sunrise Senior Living in Cary, NC. He was born August 11, 1940, son of the late Harvey J. Newton and Mary Fair Newton of Hartsville, SC. He attended Wofford College and got his Bachelor of Arts in Math with a minor in Physics in 1962. He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Teaching from Duke University in 1963.

Barry served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army from 1963 to 65. During this time, Barry met his love Nancy and they married in 1965. They started a great adventure when they moved to Germany where Barry taught for the Department of Defense school system for US military families. They lived for 3 years in the town of Weisbaden enjoying the culture and people. In 1968, he joined Bank of America (formerly NCNB) and became a Senior Vice President in bank operations in 1985. He retired in 2000, then worked for several years with WestStar Technologies.

Barry is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three children: son, Randall and wife Ann; and daughters, Jill Pilati and her husband David, and Julie Sur and her husband Zubin. Barry has three grandchildren: Chandler, Holden and Bodhi.

Barry enjoyed traveling, returning to Germany and France several times, and visiting the US west coast. Together with Nancy, they lived on Lake Norman for 48 years. He loved boating, teaching the kids to waterski, Lake Norman sunsets and swimming with their golden retriever, Oscar. Barry also enjoyed tennis, snow skiing, playing his guitar, and golfing. He especially loved Duke basketball “Go Duke”, as he would say. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville, NC.

A memorial service will be held on September 9th, 2022 at 10 AM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
