

He was born August 30, 1923 in Normal, Illinois. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arnett Sterling Chapin. He grew up on the family farm in Holder, Illinois. In 1934 the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. He graduated from St, Petersburg High School where he met the love of his life Farris Singleton, they were married Sept 11, 1943. There has never been a moment of his life when Farris has not been a part of him. During World II he served in the United States Coast Guard in the Southwest Pacific at New Guinea, Borneo, The Philippine Islands, Okinawa and Japan. He was on the first American ship to enter Manila Harbor during the Fall of Manila. He was awarded the American Defense Service Metal, American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal WWII, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and the USCG Good Conduct Medal.
During his long business career, he lived in St Petersburg, Fl, Louisville, KY, Baltimore, MD and San Francisco, CA. He retired from Marshall Field & Co., Chicago, IL and then moved to Williamsburg, VA and to Cary, NC in 1985.
Tom was a long-time member of Resurrection Lutheran Church where he served on the Board of Lay Ministers and loved the many Bible Study Groups.
On July 2, 1050 he became a born again Christian and has always trusted the Lord Jesus to lead and guide and always direct his paths.
Tom was an amazing, creative and talented artist and it gave him great pleasure and joy to share his beautiful art with family and friends.
Preceding him in death is his beautiful and loving wife of 69 years, Farris Singleton Chapin. Surviving him are his loving family, daughters Elizabeth Cook, Nell Hall, son-in-law Steve Hall, grandson and best friend Matthew Chapin Hall of Cary, NC. Brother, Robert Edward Chapin, sister-in-law Ruth Hardin Chapin and their children Nancy Chapin and Laura Chapin Bokenkamp of St. Petersburg, FL.
Tom was a selfless, kind and gentle man who always put others first. He will be missed tremendously.
A memorial service will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 100 Lochmere Drive West, Cary, North Carolina on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Memorial Fund.
Inurnment will be private.
