Colene Foust Glass, 92, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 16, 2012, in her home in Cary, NC. She was born January 16, 1920, in the rural Grays Chapel community in Randolph County, NC, where she grew up living and working on the family farm. She graduated from Grays Chapel High School where she was the Valedictorian of her graduating class. She was predeceased by her parents, Jasper and Addie Foust, of Grays Chapel and her siblings, Edith, James, Clara, Tracy and Robert.
She was a living example of the Protestant work ethic, having been employed by several banks before retiring in the early 1990s. She was presented the Paul Harris Fellow recognition by the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club in 2005. She had been an active participant in activities at the Cary Senior Center before her health began to decline.
In addition to her family, she loved many things in life: her farm-life upbringing, “old-time things", listening to and watching birds, friendly dogs, falling snow, flowers, strawberries and peaches, playing bingo and making dolls at the Senior Center for hospitalized children, and especially the sausage biscuits brought to her after each monthly Methodist Men’s meeting by her dear friend, Rotarian Jim Smith.
She is survived by her son, Admiral F. Stephen Glass and his wife, Martha of Cary; son Paul Edward Glass of Archdale, NC; brother, Paul Foust and his wife, Peggy of Asheboro, NC; granddaughter, Elizabeth Foust Glass Gill and husband, Chris, and their two sons, Jackson and Ben of Waxhaw, NC; grandson, Craig Steven Glass and wife, Gina, and their two children, Caroline and Wills of Chattanooga, TN; her beloved 1997 Honda Civic hatchback (40,000 actual miles); and many relatives and friends who loved her and will miss her dearly.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Cary, on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Following the memorial service and visitation, her ashes will be interred in the Grays Chapel United Methodist Church near Franklinville,
NC, where she will have a well-deserved rest next to her parents and near her grandparents.
Her family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made on-line to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or by mail to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612.
