Dan was the beloved husband of Cheryl Lipp for 54 years; loving father to Dana Lipp Peele (Jason) and Rev. Dr. Timothy Daniel Lipp (Beth); and grandfather (aka Pop Pop) to Charlotte Peele, Katie Peele, Sophie Lipp and Cohen Lipp. He was predeceased by his parents Everett Hale Lipp and Laverna Marie Lambert Lipp and brother Robert “Bob” Lipp. He is also survived by his brother David Lipp (Kim) and brother-in-law Ryan Cannon (Jennifer), along with eight nieces and five nephews, Annette Lipp, Lynette Lipp McBride (Jim), Sarah Lipp, Megan Lipp, Alyssa Leimberger, Ellie Leimberger, Madison Cannon, Dallas Cannon, Josh Cannon (Courtney), Zack Cannon, Ben Leimberger, Chris Lipp and Ethan Lipp.
Dan was born March 30, 1948, and lived in Falls Church, Virginia. He was the youngest of three sons to Everett and Laverna Lipp from RFD Dayton and Fort Dodge, Iowa who married and moved to live close to Washington D.C. He grew up in a Christian home and loved the Lord from an early age attending Columbia Baptist Church that would become the family church for many years. He enjoyed a fun and lively childhood with his brothers playing with kids in the neighborhood, hunting in the woods, and learning to play the trumpet. In high school he played basketball and would play as a walk-on in college. He also played trumpet in the marching band.
After graduating from Falls Church High School in 1966, Dan attended Furman University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1970. He would marry the love of his life, Cheryl Jennings June 14, 1970, and together they would move to Louisville, Kentucky to prepare for ministry at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dan graduated from seminary in 1972 and accepted his first church staff position as minister of youth and education at Magnolia Street Baptist Church, Greensboro, North Carolina. It was there they welcomed their daughter, Dana Michelle Lipp, to the family on March 16, 1973. His second church in North Carolina would be in Goldsboro, North Carolina at Madison Avenue Baptist Church where he continued to work with youth and education. The Lipps moved to Cary, North Carolina in 1977 to serve at First Baptist Church Cary where they welcomed their son, Timothy Daniel Lipp, to the family on February 27, 1978. Many lifetime friendships were made at First Baptist Church Cary and Dan and Cheryl shared many experiences together in the ministry including teaching Sunday School training for the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. Dan loved denomination ministry and began helping with the church building and planning ministry to provide consultations to local churches. Eventually he moved the family to the foothills of North Carolina to serve the Caldwell Baptist Association in 1990. But the triangle area would call him back to serve four more churches before he would retire: Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, Cresset Baptist Church in Durham, Highland Baptist Church in Raleigh, and First United Methodist Church in Cary. His career as a vocational minister in the local church span over 40 years!
If you knew Dan you knew his love of travel was second to his love of the ministry. Over the years Dan and Cheryl would travel together on cruises throughout the Caribbean, fly to Hawaii to enjoy the Islands of Kauai, Maui, the Big Island and Honolulu, visit Alaska by boat and train, take a once in a lifetime family trip with his brothers to Sweden to meet their mother’s family, and visit the holy land and follow Paul’s missionary journeys in Greece and Italy. Dan and Cheryl frequented North Carolina beaches and mountains for quick getaways. They traveled the globe together and enjoyed learning cultures and seeing the beauty of God’s handiwork here on earth.
Dan’s other passion was flowers and working in the yard. He kept a finely manicured lawn with beautiful flowers and plants for every season of the year. He had a green thumb and even tried his hand at raising fresh and saltwater fish aquariums. One of Dan and Cheryl’s favorite pastimes was visiting gardens in the triangle and surrounding areas, WRAL gardens was one of their favorites. Dan was a beloved pastor, friend, brother, son, uncle, father and husband, and will be deeply missed!
